Oh too many over the years to single out that one I alluded too.

There was also this band whose singer I was going out with a few years ago and I'd hang round the studio sometimes. it just became a joke the number of times she'd do vocal takes and ask for notes to be punched in. One day she sang every couplet seven times and asked the engineer to paste a final version taken from several of the seven parts. For each couplet.
They spent weeks in the studio and the best take they ever did was live at Maida Vale when she had to do it like they did in the old days.

- the "creative" use of auto-tune.

- the use of auto-tune to correct bad singing.

The first is a matter of taste; I think it sounds crap, and has done for more than ten years. Others may well like it.

The second is a more complex matter. It is used to make pretty boys and girls hit the notes. Except it really doesn't benefit the sound quality. You can hear when it's been used, and it isn't nice.

Sorry. I looked it up and the album is Modulate (2002) and it was vocoder.

Sound On Sound came through today, great news Cubase 5 incorporates the same functionality directly in the audio editor.

The thing is that they already use all sorts of other techniques to make them sound better anyway. The production cat is sort of out of the bag; the singers are already just one small part of the chain in making a pop record for the hit parade.
