Buying a bike: advice, recommendations and chat

They're utterly perfect for the Dutch, with their distinct lack of gradient anywhere and wonderful cycling infrastructure. Using one anywhere with hills takes... a certain mindset :D
That’s why I said it was good for fitness! I’m loath to go back to my adventure road bike

Though actually that Carrera GG wanted too many gears on would also fit the bill pretty well. Maintenance would be a little harder... But bloody cheap. 2.5kg heavier than the Nexus bike though.

Actually I'd probably walk back from that a bit... I mean Halfords is always a bit chancy with initial setup.

This B’twin Elops city bike is a simple step through frame, six speed, built in lights from Decathlon. £249.99. Frame has a lifetime guarantee.
Available in several colours.

And as that 58year old woman with a gammy knee this one is probably the most like what I am looking for (as far as I can tell) I really like the one maomao posted but no gears makes me shudder. 6 is a nice round number

And it comes in some very pretty colours which is a plus

Sadly, out of stock though

Here in Bristol there are quite a few bike workshops that sell refurbished bikes as well as do maintenance etc. Its where I go to get my bike serviced. There might be similar more local to you felixthecat .

We may have got confused somewhere along the road. The one maomao posted (first one) has eight gears. It also weighs eight kg less than that b'twin. Which is a lot.

The main thing was that the gears on the maomao orange one require very little servicing.

Gears need sod all servicing.
Just a once-over every 100 miles - when you're checking the brakes and tyres.

The first one he posted was a Dutch bike - one of the first posts!

But the orange/red one - probably a bit more than I wanted to spend on a pootling bike. Sadly.

Yeah, fair enough, can't get round that. But just bear in mind 19.1kg is heavy :D.

felixthecat you really need to plot some routes on Google earth so we can see what sort of terrain you will be riding on - otherwise you may spend a lot of time pushing the bike up hills ...

Now see, that is useful information. I have no idea how much the average bike weighs, so it's helpful to know. Now how the hell do I know what frame size? I'm 5'7ish

Ah. Now... that's also complicated. :D

Most bikes will have a size chart linked to them, so you can check that for guidance, then come back on here and double check.

Hub gears aren't much heavier when you take into account only one chainring and one sprocket, no mechs, shorter chain and shorter spokes on back wheel. That first bike was only 11.5kg. Maybe a bit pricey but that's lighter than most 500 quid mountain bikes.
My bike weighs 14kg and it cost mumble not £500.

I reckon, for a cheap new bike, I'd be inclined towards a hybrid... e.g this one (though Evans, Mike Ashley). 11.5kg at £290... Get a bit more versatility in ride position and the like... Honestly though that probably needs some input from weepiper or some of the other people on here who aren't men and/or have more experience with a wide range of what people are looking for.

This actually made me go and weigh my current bike - sans locks and tools ...

18KG - it's a lot lighter than my old one ...

It's not pretty but it ticks the boxes all round otherwise

Except the fucker isn't available until November

Yeah, Decathlon probably have something similar, but their site seems to be down.
They only let a limited number of orders through per day now. I went there the other evening to pick up some bits and the bike section was almost entirely empty - bikes, helmets, accessories. Stripped bare apart from a few demo bikes.

The cheapest ready to go now half decent bikes I could find a couple of weeks ago were the Cube mountain bikes from bike discount at 400 euros.

I wasn't looking at women's frames though. This is rather pink and has too many gears. Also cant find a weight for it cause I'm on my tiny phone. Ridgebacks are generally quite good and I think it's the right size.

Oooh. That's alright

Although this thing of beauty has just come up on our local FB marketplace - but I remember y'all saying they weigh a ton
