Buying a bike: advice, recommendations and chat

Is there a bike shop near you felixthecat ? I know it’s been mentioned already, but we’re going off on tangents again... and really there’s no substitute for actually trying out a few bikes, even ones you can’t afford. At least give you a handle on what suits you... a bike that fits how you use it, and your physiology is by far the most important thing. Coz y’know, want to be minimising the repetitive micro-tears in your plantar fascia :hmm:
Yes there's a bike shop thats got a good rep about 3 miles away. TT Cycles | Bike Shop

Oooh I forgot Julian House. Dammit they will be a good bet

I'm in Trowbridge so towpath is Bath one way and Devizes t'other. It's a fair old climb up Caen Hill - I've done it in years gone by and I remember stopping at every 3rd lock :D

Yeah there do seem to be some less... dramatic... routes around there without too much up (other than the lock itself). But for that area and that path specifically I would really recommend not getting a sit up and beg type bike. Especially for that kind of distance. A basic mountain bike/tourer on the mountain bike end of the spectrum would suit.

You also really don’t want to be going down the locks and worrying about your braking :D

That second shop looks pretty promising. Friend of mine lives in Trowbridge, used to post here aeons ago. I think he got a bike on cycle to work recently... dunno if that might be an option for you?

I'm going to take a stroll down to the Julian House bike workshop on Friday - I feel a little more prepared to do that now I've got a better idea of what points to look for
I will report back.

The TT place probably also worth a look as they stock Cube, admittedly probably totally out of stock, but worth a peak.

My mum lives just up the road from there so next time I'm over there I'll pop down

I'm in no hurry to have a bike NOW, but I'd like one reasonably soon

I love the whole engineering aspect of that lock system. How to make water go uphill

Fuck me! Who would have thought that the simple bicycle could become so complicated. Back when I were a lad, possession of a bike with a three speed hub was being top of the tree. :D

Back when you were a lad it was direct drive only, massive wheel at the front, small one at the back. 150 years later the ‘mullet bike’ is back in fashion in the mtb world, nothing new under the sun, etc...

Well I've been looking at bikes and talking to bike shops. I've decided I'm going to wait a bit, save a bit more cash and buy an ebike. It makes more sense in the long run and it would mean in good weather I would consider cycling to work (there is no way I'd do it in the cold and rain). That is, if I ever go back into work...

So thank you for all the advice - much appreciated

Anyone got any ideas on bikes for a five year old? 120cm tall and 46-47cm inside leg. Ideally would like something that can adjust up a bit so she can ride it for a couple of years and pass to her brother. Budget is 150ish (well, that and a balance bike for the little one under 200 would be ideal). Is she big enough for a bmx? I need something that I can persuade her is better than some Disney themed piece of shit from the toyshop.

Probably looking at a 16" wheel BMX rather than a standard 20" one at five. My two sons were on a 16" wheel Mongoose BMX at that age but tbh I wouldn't recommend, as it was heavy and the highish ratio single gear limits what sort of riding they can do. Secondhand Frog bike? She's still quite small so probably a Frog 48 will be the biggest she could manage, there's plenty on eBay going for your sort of budget and they're very nice quality, easy to ride because they're lightweight and well proportioned parts. This age range will generally still be in good condition secondhand too.

^^^^^ This.

Really? The bike they recommend for her is lovely (Forme Cubley) and worth £240. But then I don't get to spend the next ten years buying them bikes, fixing them and doing them up and selling them on.

It's also the case that I have the money now but in year's time might resent the DD (though 11 quid is really cheap for what it is and they have 19 quid off sign up.).

Unfortunately my wife agrees with Bahnhof Strasse and beesonthewhatnow so I'm going to get the Cubley for the girl and the Frog balance bike for the boy too. They have a rewards scheme ('pedal points') and if you invite someone you get a tenner off so if either of you are currently using it and want to save money by inviting me (saves me too) let me know.

Ehrm, beesonthewhatnow may wish to do this; got BB2 a Frog Bike then got BB1 a new bike too, the day it arrived they cancelled my direct debit, so it seems it is free. Best I don’t have much to do with them...
