Bubble cars of 1960 vintage still working the Cardiff Bay line

Slightly off topic, but only slightly
The last passenger working of 31, Brush 2, hauled carriages running via York road(no more), to Moorgate (no more) via the City Widened Lines, then back via the Hotel Curve (no more) then out passing Kings Corss and on to Herford

was on the Dylan Thomas train (carriage) to the bay earlier

Good man - it was me that got it named by his daughter Aeronwy back in 2004 on the 90th anniversary of his birth. They failed /omitted / deliberately to invite me for the dedication as I was more than prepared to give a good speech about Dylan and his family links to the GWR. When ATW took the plates off a couple of years ago , they kindly put them back on when I pointed it out. Aeronwy (RIP) was delighted at the gesture. When on the right side of the border I always look out for it.

Terrible news!

The end is nigh for Chiltern’s ‘Bubble cars’

More than that , it is the end of the Modernisation era DMU's on the network.

Very worn wheelsets apparently , the most expenisive part of an unit , no spares anywhere , anymore .....as Dylan would say "Do not go gently etc ......"

They used to have one of those running up and down the Severn Beach line for years, No.55026, running out of the bay platform at the east end of Temple Meads. It did all the off-peak services, which I think were hourly at that time. Sadly it was one of the ones that didn't survive, it was bought for preservation but vandalised and then scrapped.

I love an old-school DMU. The Cummins-engined 150 being my all time favourite. I've spent countless hours riding between deepest, darkest Herefordshire and Birmingham on them.
