Brixton Water Lane, old chip shop – and the Windrush ‘water feature’

Hello all, hope you are all well.

This chip shop used to be owned by an Italian family, they had a daughter who went to Dick Shepard school. I used to regularly buy chips from there in the 70s/80s and play on the space invaders game after school. Effra school stood opposite and has now been developed into flats.

Think it closed down just after the riots

Hello walkssoftly :)

Thank you for stopping by and also confirming that it was Space Invaders. :)

I've always wondered how Olley's do fish so well and chips so poorly - they are absolutely terrible. I think Ken's up Half Moon Lane is the only good chippy in the area.

I've not been impressed with Olley's chips over the last maybe 10 years. They used to be much better

I am beginning to think that fish and chips is just one of these collective amnesia things - everyone really wants them to be good but usually they're crap. Really crap.

Ken's is good. The queues are always a good sign. I've given up on Ollie's.

The man who owns the effra parade one can still be occasionally seen sitting in there of an evening (at least he was last year).

There was (possibly still is) a chinese takeaway on the narrow bit of Stockwell road, after the skate park and before the Far Side, on the LH side, which used to do good proper chips and it was only 75p. I don't live that side of Brixton any more so don't know if this is still the case.

apparently, elfnsafety means chip shops can't make the oil as hot these days so the chips just aren't the same. not sure if true.

I'll just add this because I can.

The Prince and the Showgirl was on the other day. Marilyn lived on Water Lane :)

I'll show my age now but when I was a kid inthe 60s/70s there was a great chippie on Water Lane called Ginger's. Ginger was a huge man who would cook wearing a vest. There were massive queues on a friday night. I think it later moved to Upper Tulse Hill for a while

In the film. Her character in the film lived in Brixton.

Don't remember Brixton Water Lane being mentioned...

Ohhh that makes far more sense.

Brixton was theatre land for a while, wasn't it. Digs and rooming houses and such like for the theatre folk.
