I remember seeing Eraserhead at the "old" Ritzy in the early 1980s. I've never been to a film before where people were in such animated disagreement afterwards on the way out. [amazing/revolting etc]

1978 according to this article. I first went there in 1979. It was a cinema from 1954 and I remember buying a 25th anniversary t-shirt around then , although the Ritzy name had only been in use for a year or so.

A reward of up to £20,000 has been offered for information about the murder of a teenager who was attacked and killed after leaving a nightclub in Brixton 31 years ago.
18 year-old James Akinwande was chased, beaten and stabbed by a large group of men in the centre of Brixton after leaving a nightclub in Brighton Terrace, at about 4.45 a.m. in the early hours of Sunday 16 January 1994, and the fatal attack appears to have taken place outside the Boots Chemist, adjacent to the site of the 1999 terrorist attack on the local community.
Reward and fresh appeal for information over murder of James Akinwande in 1994:

I think it was called that right from the beginning when it was launched as a co-op in the council owned cinema building.
I haven't got the details to hand now, but this goes back to when much of central Brixton was compulsory purchased for
Looks like when the motorway fell through Lambeth were amenable to the Little Bit Ritzy - possibly in their view as a "meanwhile" project.
Wikipedia seems to support my view:
In 1954, it was renovated by noted cinema architect George Coles, who installed CinemaScope: the cinema was renamed "the Pullman" and the organ was removed. It was later renamed "the Classic", before closure in 1976. After this, it was re-invented as "The Little Bit Ritzy", run in collaboration with London Cinema Collective.[4] A collaboration between Lambeth Council and the management of the time ensured the cinema's survival, with the facade being rebuilt and restored to near-original condition.[citation needed]
