Brixton food & drink news: new restaurants, bars, pop ups, cafes and more

Some updates and thoughts:

Paddy's Bar is only opening on a temp events license. so it might not open for some time after Jan 2nd.

The Dogstar's steel shutters have already been tagged.

Does anyone go to the PoW pub part any more? Getting rid of those Thursday jam sessions really was a stupid move.

Weds night at Bricks could be the best night out in Brixton now.

As for the Albert, here's the worst things to happen to the place:

1. Removing the stage so the venue can no longer host proper live shows
2. Building that ridiculous, crawl-through fortress DJ booth (which appears to be slowly deconstructing)
3. Getting rid of the sound system and not replacing the bass bin (my bass bin, as it happens) that their clueless DJs have blown up
4. Installing managers who don't 'get' the place
5. Removing the trees in the back garden
6. Adding those dazzlingly bright neon adverts for beers

Have I missed anything?

Went to the new Paddy's Yard ex Market House place last night, it was alright, fairly busy, good sevice, drinks prices the average to be expected in these trying times. DJ later on (about 11pm?) playing some 90s cheesy house which was good for a little drunken dance although it had got emptier by then.

They're having a reggae night next week, and have life drawing classes upstairs if that's your thing
The 2 for 1 cocktail deal on weekdays before 9pm looks appealing...

They're currently running on events licensing, so unless they can come to a deal with the owner they manoeuvred out against his will, the place won't be staying open much longer.

What were the drinks prices like? Cheaper than the Albert? And did they turn the ultra bright lighting down?

From memory single whisky £4.50, pint of guiness £6, wine £7.
Lighting was low and dark. Overall it was nice to have somewhere new to try on our pub crawl.

The Albert had some god awful singer inside, and it was too cold to be inthe Garden, so was happy to duck out from there unfortunately.

Yeah, the Albert has totally lost the plot when it comes live entertainment.

What's the reggae night, I can't see a website to see what's on?

San Marino is full of people wearing pirate hats as it's Paganfest 2025 taking place at the Academy fearuring such acts as, err, Alestorm, Ensiferum, TYR, Heidevolk, and Elvenking.

🤘

Alestorm are good fun, if you like metal heads doing jigs in the audience
It's great for the local bars too. San Marino are luring punters in with metal blaring over the sound system.

Some guys going to the show started chatting to me saying that I looked like I was going to the gig. Not sure how to take that!

Edit: they're playing Alestorm now and they sound like a heap of fun. Like Motorhead meets Big Country meets Europe, with double bass drums on max. Great stuff!

Came back down CHL at half nine this evening to go to the off license.

Apart from the wine bar in market row and the Irish bar whole street was dead.

Coming back on tube and it used to be busy with people going out Saturday night.

Not the case now

I had a drink and a chat with the manager at Paddy's bar and then went across to the Albert.

I don't know if anyone remembers when the Prince of Wales went through its Irish phase in the early 90s, but Paddy's had a similar boatload of Irish tut tacked thrown around the place. Once the lights had been turned down there was a pleasant enough vibe, although there was absolutely nothing musically Irish coming from the DJs. It was just the same as what they used to play there (RnB etc),

The Albert was fairly busy for a while with the no-DJ playlist banging out fun music.
