Breaking at the 2024 Olympics

Indeliblelink

\......👁&👁......./
I used to a like a bit of breakdancing in the 1980s, watching rather than participating [I went down the graffiti avenue of hip hop culture instead]. Back then it was teenagers with some lino in the local shopping centre who knew their uprock from their downrock and body popping, copying what they'd seen in music videos and films like Breakin' or Flashdance. Now it's an Olympic sport.
Fitting that it should be on the 40th anniversary year of the height of the original breakdance craze when artists like Rock Steady Crew & Break Machine were charting.
So I willl be interested to watch the "Breaking", as it's know known, at this year's Olympics. I don't think they're featuring it at the next one [LA 2028] so enjoy it for now.

Think it's on 9th [Women's] and 10th [Men's] August.

this is interesting regarding what tunes the DJs can play:

"DJs have to curate their mix from a limited playlist of about 390 tracks, whose rights have been pre-cleared to be played on live TV. The playlist’s content is highly confidential but would not only include familiar songs, said Martin Gilian, a spokesperson for the World Dance Sport Federation (WDSF). “Some of them the breakers will have heard before, some are more rare.”

Breaking olympics 2024 paris is starting from tomorrow and I'm looking forward to it but why people doesn't consider break dance as sport?
I'm sure it's going to be lots of fun and competitive. I just find it ridiculous that it gets in the Olympics before cricket, squash, snooker and darts.

Anybody caught some action yet? Think its the b-girling this afternoon and b-boying tomorrow. Seems that everywhere showing it is either pay subscription (Discovery Plus) or a free trial which I'd rather not give any payment card over for.

Sue - b-boy/b-girl basically a breakdancer.

Watching it now on Eurosport. Some of them do have proper skillz but tbh am finding it a bit meh!

The excitement of breakdancing is when its happening at the street level, with a DJ cutting and scratching, graffiti artists, and its all raw and spontaneous, etc. So, anything a bit too choreographed and constrained loses that I think. Its not supposed to be ballroom dancing.

OK, as enjoyable as that was, I have no idea whatsoever how it works as a competition. Maybe it would have been better introducing it to Strictly come dancing, instead. I want to see Angela Rippon doing head spins.

I missed this thread earlier when I was trying to find where to watch the qualifiers. I posted this on the general Olympics thread.

Just caught final on mainstream on iPlayer. But would have been nice to watch qualifiers and the Australian one which has gone viral on account of being embarrassingly bad 😂

Looks like Honey G wearing a cricket uniform.😂

I never thought I would have an opinion on breakdancing but we watched it all afternoon and got completely invested in it. I was fuming at the final. The other girl should have got gold. She was much better!!

(Not that I have the faintest idea what is good in breakdancing and what isn’t).

Interesting. Both my husband and I thought Japan was going to win, before they announced it. We thought she was a clear winner...

A minimum of three or more uneven number of judges score the battles on six criteria - creativity, personality, technique, variety, performativity and musicality.

Each parameter has different weightage in a battle, with technique, performativity and creativity constituting 60 per cent of the total score while variety, musicality and personality make up the remaining 40 per cent.

The judges submit their votes after each round and the breaker with the highest points is declared the winner.

We preferred the other girl because she was lovely and smiley and her moves were very impressive!

But like I said, we know nothing although beesonthewhatnow has now read up on the scoring rules so we are much better prepared for the men’s round. 🤣

Raygun still going viral for wrong reasons, here she is in another battle. I guess her style is more 'lie down on the floor' without a lot of acrobatics. Well, it's unusual - i.e. creative! But it's just like she's still on level 5 and everyone at the Olympics was on 10... Not everyone can do the gymnastics stuff, but that doesn't preclude them from breaking. But it does make it a less impressive to most people.
