Brazil 2 North Korea 1

North Korea did their country proud. Excellent ball control, superb defending and a great attitude from start to finish. No whinging, no diving, no antics, just solid determination. Fair play to them.

couldn't agree more, especially with the penultimate sentence.

unless they had links to the 'outside world' i think that would be pretty hard, irrespective of whether they're followed around by north korean security bods.

Some families are still split between the North and the South though aren't they?

i don't really know enough about it to be honest apart from that there's friction between the two countries, those that come down from the north are quite often looked down upon as poor relations in many respects.

wasn't there an olympic team or similar that went 'missing' after competing...?

Yeah, but occasionally, the North Koreans let some South Koreans meet their North Korean family

There were loads of stories during the Cold War when people were defecting during Olympics etc.

I remember Nadia Comaneci defecting, and here's a list of loads of others

You may be thinking of Indians going walkies whilst visiting certain countries

ETA: Could be this story

The defection of nine members of Afghanistan's national football team during the squad's first visit to a European Union nation since the fall of the Taleban has sparked a heated debate about the role of sports in this society, and led to the disbandment of the team.

No doubt the NK fans back home will enjoy watching highlights of their famous 1-0 win over Brazil ;)

:D

I thought they played really well - solid, good teamwork and they actually tried to attack rather than just getting 10 men behind the ball.

Brazil looked a little short on ideas to be honest - Kaka was quiet, Fabiano looks like he hasn't scored for ages and bar Robinho (great pass for Elano's goal) there wasn't much "Brazilian flair"!

Saying that if England ended up playing them they'd probably turn on the samba style big time and properly embarass us

They definitely played as a proper team, rather than the group of individuals every other country (except Germany) has put out so far.

A large part of that is probably that they have been constantly travelling and playing as a team for at least the past six months. They're more akin to a club side.

I loved their number 9. He was all heart and he had considerable ability to back it up. His first touch would put most premiership players to shame.

Enjoyed this game as much as any of the matches so far.

Really surprised by how well N. Korea played. Super first half, well drilled and some brilliant defending.

Thought Brazil looked... well, rather lacking. Robinho was ace, but most of the rest of them looked a bit unimpressive, considering. Kaka doesn't look at £60m player, in any way.

Ronaldinho is probably not amused.

Well I can tell you without fear of contradiction that Brazilians expect their team to score in the first 2 minutes, by half time they were going crazy that Brazil hadn't scored. Fuck me! I'd hate to be a Brazilian football player, the people expect so much from them

Some interesting facts I found reported this morning :)

82% of Brazilians intend to watch the World Cup games at home

81% said they would wear the Brazil shirt

Sales of new TVs should reach 6.5 million, with 480,000 home theaters also being sold and a spike in cable subscribers, up by as much as 1.3 million.

The banks and the financial institutions in Brazil have been authorized by the Central Bank to make changes in their operating hours on days when the Brazilian soccer team plays in the World Cup in South Africa.

According to Ministry of Planning Rule 491 (“Portaria 491″), on days when games begin at 3:30 pm, the workday will end at 2:00 pm. And on days when games start at 11:00 am, workers will be dismissed at 10:30 and return at 2:00 pm.

I drive with my England flags just to freak out the oceans of green and yellow. Mouths drop open - someone not supporting Brasil how can that be and even advertising it  but almost always leads to good humored banter, which is the idea.

Only once did I get abuse and threat of violence but that was in the last world cup from a drunk guy in Itabuna.

Had to get everything done before lunch yesterday as the country literally closes down for World cup games.

I will be up in Manaus next week and will take my England flags see how they go down there. Where did you watch the game 1%?

In Rico's bar that's the name of the guy who owns it, I think the bar is called the electric fish (peixe elétrico) but I didn't see a sign, the landmark I use is St John's Cemetery, it is close to there.

I'm going to Ponta Negra (sp) tomorrow there is a party there this weekend, but it isn't far so if you are going to be in Manaus and want a beer let me know, maybe we can meet up somewhere :)

You'll be Ok with an England flag, just don't have an Argentinean one
