Black & White Stripey Tops - irrational dislike

Something that has been bothering me for a while is people who where socks with high heels...it's dreadful, what are they thinking?

It’s a cyclical fashion thing. Popular every twenty years or so since the eighties and has earlier iterations in (lower) heels and knee socks in the 60s and early 70s. That of course has roots in knitted stockings of the prewar period (and going back centuries), with the 60s fashion angle being the gap between hemline and sock tops - a radical novelty. The eighties iteration tended to slightly longer length skirts and at any rate the bare knee and thigh were hardly shocking any more. But the fashion grammar is the same.

Anyway, why not? Why should heel height have a bearing on whether socks are worn? There’s also the issue of comfort, of course.

The woman in the picture certainly mixes it up with lengths of skirts, socks and height of heels, sometimes even shorts. The image just makes me shudder and think no or why.

Can I interest anyone in a nice, uh, Junya Watanabe COMME des GARÇONS MAN distressed sweater with zippers?

How about a JUNYA WATANABE MAN PINK Destroyed Stripe Knit Top White,Black XS-S?

I don't know why some of the words have to be in allcaps but I trust there's a good reason for it?

On a related note, was watching an old episode of Always Sunny, noticed this - neither quite black/white, but still notable for two stripy tops in one scene:

If I had to guess (and where fashion is concerned the smart money is on me being wrong), it might be that it draws an association with middle-aged men wearing socks with sandals.

Nah. Because sandals are much more similar to women’s flat shoes.

I suppose there’s a little bit of incongruent childishness in the look. Maybe it’s that.

Yeah, that’s a point. Like little girls playing in Mummy’s shoes.

Your knowledge in this area outstrips mine
by a huge margin, but I feel like there might still be an element of the socks with sandals thing, with the association being more about the “open shoe with socks on” element than the angle of the shoe/heel.

Question: Stop and think - who is your least favourite Spice Girl?

I warned you

I might experiment with the stripey top look if I was to suddenly find I’d lost six stone.
