big smooth river rocks (mini boulders) where in the UK can i look to find them

ISTR that you live in a chalk stream area. You're going to need to go north or west. Wharfe valley?

It's bad to steal them from their natural home. You could make some out of concrete or styrofoam instead.

If you must steal them, you have to make sure they match the local geology otherwise you'll get caught.

Whatever you do, don't try to nick any off that really pebbly beach just past that really rough estate at Wallsend, or you might find yourself caught between a rock and a hard place.
