Also really looking forward to seeing Bill Bailey. It is the Big Chill and not The Glade (which I'm also going to as well as Glasto), but I still like the chill aspect of it, and the music is always good! It's so nice to have hassle free camping with space, minimal queues, and decent weather!

I've stayed up through many nights talking nonsense with randoms in 24hour cafe, and the media mix stylee tents are wicked when wasted at stupid o'clock!

The side attractions have been poor 2006/2007; 2005 had Punch Drunk and a decent Art Trail. I'm hoping 2008 isn't another poor one for side attractions again.

I avoided this for years because of the name it had for itself but went last year as my GF has always gone and I know a few people who DJ there. Had a great time, didn't take my daughter, didn't mind the class of the people there and had a large time.

The Friday night with Hospital Records, Marky, DMZ, Loofah etc was as good as any line up I've seen at any of the dance tents at any other festival. Plus I saw loads of other top acts and had great fun with my mates in a beautiful location.

I was in the van field, saw those twats with the massive vans, but really, there were only a handful of them and everyone else thought they were cocks too. I've seen wankers at every festival I've been to, it's nowt new.

If you don't like it, don't go.

Will be going this year, my 3rd time and dont get all the stick it's getting on here. Yeah the majority of the crowd is middle-class so what? id say thats pretty much the case at most festivals.

The site is beautiful, its been boiling hot when ever I've been. The dance tent was top draw last year as ringo says and as for everything finishing at 3, theres the 24hr cafe which can get pretty lively or I often opt for finding a nice spot on the hill and watch the sunrise with mates.

It's not a typical mad avin-it festival but I've had my fair share of barmy nights there thats for sure.

But such a perfect child trap mwahahaha

I want to go again this year, if only for Norman Jay

I went to this last year and have to say I quite enjoyed myself. It is a bit of a corporate wankfest and as others have said it is really upper middle class (the car park was rammed full of Merc and Audis). However the location is beautiful and there were some decent DJ's playing (depending on your taste), totally dies at around 3am though.

i can't go this year due to a wedding but I probably would go again if only for Norman J's set on Sunday afternoon in glorious sunshine.

Agreed Norman J's set was absolutley wicked in the glorious sunshine as were the beatbox choir and not forgetting mr scruff :) should be more to do later on though but getting wasted with ya mates back at the tents listening to big chill radio is always an option when all else fails...

Swaw Mr Scruff at WOMAD last year, he was da biz and rocked his tent!!

Never made Big Chill, we probably won't be going for it at any time (not really our thing for various reasons ;) ) but I've heard probably more goods AND bads about this one than any other, Glastonbury aside.

Might go, usually get free tix so its rude not to.
Most of the criticisms are complete bollocks, but one thing they do need to sort out is better security for camping areas.

Too many tent robbing scouse gangs armed with knives and not enough of them being knocked to the ground and pepper sprayed before being beaten up and locked up. In my opinion.

Word is that Big Chill Radio might be scrapped this year. Could be trouble as it's very popular when there's nowt else going on.

Not sure if I'll go this year, I did visuals for TY on the main stage last year, which was fun...but I hated all the sitting around doing nothing all day....:D

Usually run by Pete Lawrence who has left The Big Chill (split up with his wife I think) so this maybe true.

So, if the main stage organiser goes, then that's it for the main stage?

They must be able to get someone else in to run it

:)

I've got my ticket and I'm gonna have a good time even if all yous are determined not to :)

Things I'm excited about:

Afro Tribute to James Brown: Fred Wesley, Maceo Parker and Tony Allen all together in an afro-funk orchestra playing James Brown tunes. How can that not be amazing?

African Head Charge: I've not seen them play for 15 years. Last time I saw them was some of the most fun I've had at a gig without drugs.

Dub action painting: Adrian Sherwood DJs while Lee Perry MCs and paints a picture  Actually that might be rubbish. You never know with Mr Perry.

Buzzcocks!

Bill Bailey!

Greg Wilson!

Loads of acts I'd never normally get off my arse to watch but will probably stagger along to if I'm not otherwise distracted: Jeffrey Lewis, Leonard Cohen, Fujiya & Miyagi, Roisin Murphy, Bomb the Bass, plenty of others.

And, most importantly, the people I'm going with :)

Yep. It changed for me when they massively upped the capacity and everything fell apart. The toilets were fucking dreadful, the queues massive and the stewarding a joke.

Yep that was what changed it for me, too. It was great when I first started going in '99, there were about 3000 people and more like a large party than a festival. For the first 3 years I went I thoroughly enjoyed it. And then the two years after that, it had got noticeably corporate and ballooned to a capacity of 30,000.

I've got some great memories of it in the early days - it used to be fantastic - but it's turned into something I just don't want to go to.

Not dissing anyone else who goes - I just prefer smaller, more independent, DIY-style festivals I guess.....

[W of W adds : Lack of drugs is not obligatory with them!!! ;) ]

[W of W adds : something very similar is happening at WOMAD this year ... hmmm!!! :) ]

Fucking hell, I wish I was going now!!!!

Too many bloody festivals, too little damned time ....

Bomb The Bass still going? Blimey!!

there is something for everyone at the Chill... i was concerned it would be too "chilled" for me but I've had a good time the last 2 years only thing putting me off this year is that it will be be the 4th festival weekend in a row if i go and will prob be wiped out... hope it's not true about big chill radio... "big up yer tent" :)

Still waiting for confirmation on the BC Radio business. Last year the DJ's from http://www.purple-radio.co.uk, played the tunes. I've had a weekly reggae show on there since August so was looking forward to it, but it's looking doubtful.

I've just bought tickets for this.
I looked for a thread and found this one. It seems I've already voted that I'm going which is odd because I've only just decided  I was probably just being optimistic  Anyway I'm going now :D

After the reports from Glasto I'm looking forward to Leonard Cohen, hope he does Hallelujah

i loved the two Larmer Tree ones i went to and i went to two at Eastnor after they finished, the last one was when it got silly big and (imo) the crowd changed a fair bit.

said i'd never go again and didn't in 2006 but got given a free ticket last year so i went. not going again unless a blag presents itself.

still had fun mind and there is still some quality music to be had which is what it's all about at the end of the day.

PK is dead right about security though, that camping field was a robbers free for all last year, proper out of hand. be warned :(

See you there MsShirl!! Yay!!! Camp with us, etc. :)

Last post I put up, months ago, I was whingeing a bit about not going and having to miss cool shit like African Headcharge.

But then Sunrise Celebration got rained off late May and then the organisers of that struck up a deal with the BC for most Sunrise tickeholders/stages/etc. to blag into Eastnor on compensatory tickets :D

So we'll be there, as will LevellerRich (scouseboy), also Eva Luna from this very site. I'm excited now, never been!

I hear the Glastonbury (Burrowhills) Cider Bus will be in attendance and not only that, something called the Aspalls Cider Barn, class scrumpy from Suffolk.

Plus the Bimble Inn in the (relocated) Sunrise area with nice ales ....

Fuck how 'middle class' the BC is, we're there on a near-blag...

pk can you bring your heavy ordnance to take out the tent thieves? :p

(Seriously folks, take sensible precautions against losing yer stuff to scrotes).

Thats what's exciting me .,.. so much to go for!!

This is a real worry. We got our tent turned over on the Sunday night at Glasto. Nothing taken obviously cos we're both festie vets and we both know the score about keeping your valuables with you at all times. But we still felt violated,

I'd hav thought? that enough articulately indignant middle class' ;) people complained to the organisers after last year though, to put presh on them to ensure that security is ramped up this time???????

Lets hope they emply people on security duty who recognise the difference between a tent robbing scumbag and a 'mild cigarette' smoking hippy (SWIM etc etc etc.)

they got hammered on there forum for it and tbh it's the first year i've known it to be a real problem.

they've been in the game a while now, i'm sure they'll sort it out.

i'm really interested in to how these two crowds and events will meld together because, imo, you've had an absolute touch (sunrise not happening aside). i look forward to your report

enjoy :)
