Shooters - Liverpool.
Was it "Berlin, symphony of a city"? That's about a "day in the life of" Berlin, but it was filmed in the 1920s.
To be fair, parts of "between the wars" Berlin were virtually unchanged since the mid 19th century, so there probably weren't a lot of visual clues. That's the fella. The 20's was it? I'd always imagined it was pre first world war. Still, lovely film.
It's worth it. 15 hours of excellent "modern history" drama. I'm surprised your German mates hadn't clued you in, as I've noticed that German friends are usually very quick to get you to watch anything directed by Fassbinder. Why haven't I heard of Berlin Alexanderplatz? German mates have been letting me down there. Will try and get hold of it.

Definitely deserves a wider audience, that does.
For a laugh you mean?
No, I just think it's quite a good little film, and one that shows gangsters as venal morons rather than sexy go-getters, without any moralising 'story arcs'.
LA Confidential - absolutely wonderful snapshot of 50s LA
