Beer Thread

When vmboy was a baby I had alot of trouble breastfeeding til my mum told me midwives used to recommend drinking a stout in the early evening. So I settled on a 6 o'clock bottle of Young's Double Chocolate Stout :D

Marston's Oyster Stout:
marstons-oyster-stout-1.jpg

"... the ideal accompaniment to oysters or other shellfish", according to the label. I was fresh out of them so I plumped for drugs instead. It's a rather fine accompaniment to them too, I've found.

it's a legend among bottled beers, but i never actually found it for sale until yesterday. have to say, it's beautiful.

Doom Bar's everywhere now, down to the new owners, Coors. While my CAMRA beardy weirdy sock and sandal wearing soul ought to be aghast at the nastyforeignmegaglobalgiganticocorp sticking their nasty neb in, my real brain says hurrah! Doom Bar roundly available in the North West. Goodo

Yeah, Doom Bar is one I'll pretty much always have if I see it on in apub.

I think they had it in cans on First Great Western trains for a while too. Not been on one for a bit so maybe they still have.

I was quite surprised when I saw it in a pub last time I was in London. You lot will become civilised soon if you're not careful.

worthington's white shield is part of the coors empire too - glad to see they can manage to keep making decent ale, despite this...

The Marsdon Coors empire has some great offerings, White shield being just 1 of them.

Old Empire
Pedigree
Marstons Smooth
Double Drop
....then they have their finger in the Wychwood and Jennings breweries, so always have good guest ales in most of their pubs.

ohh and they also brew Cobra too now ;)

I have friends who work in the brewery :)

not much of a fan of the marstons range, and wychwood can suck my dick. jennings aren't of much interest either tbf.

Since I have negleted this thread I will double up this time.
My wife bought me some nice beers for our anniversary present and among them were these 2 from the Black Sheep Brewery in Ripon.

Black Sheep Ale 4.4%

Lovely golden/red colour and great looking head.

Smells like a proper trad. pale English beer should (IMO), malty with a slight fruity hop smell. Mainly very malty.

Tasted like it smelled malty, but not strong, slight fruity hoppiness and nice level of carbonation. A great balance of flavours and bitterness, nothing over powering.

Verdict: I like this a lot, but I am a big fan of pale ales anyway.
It would be nice to sit in an old pub in Yorkshire with a real fire and spend and afternoon getting fucked up on this stuff.
The pubs are different in Australia. :(

Monty Python's Holy Grail Ale 4.7%
A novelty packaged beer. I don't like wacky beverages.

Pours a nice golden slightly red colour with a thin head which dissipated quickly.

Smells of nothing in particular, a bit of hops and pale malt. Not really much to go on tbh.

Tasted ok, very light malt and slight hops. A bit like a watered down American pale ale or a slightly heavy lager, somewhere between the 2. Certainly not unpleasant.

Verict: Not bad, nothing particularly wrong with it and would appeal to a larger crowd than the Black Sheep Ale, but I much preferred it's big brother.

Black sheep is lovely. Much prefer it in a pub though, rather than bottles.

Earlier on people were talking about double drop stuff and I think the only one I've had is this one, which wasn't very nice at all-

And it isn't strong enough.

Dortmunder Export 5%
Massive can with ridiculous glass included.

Thick white head which shrunk but stayed about 20mm thick.
Lovely clear pale gold colour.

Tasted great, very slight fruit hoppy taste. Maybe a little bit sweeter than expected, but still easy drinking.
Perfect summer beer garden drink. 1L goes down quick, glass weighs a ton.

Just fucking look at it!!!!

Enjoying the darkside last weekend...

Ballast Pint Black Marlin Porter 6%

You see it all.

Smells great. Dark coffee, roasted grains & choclate. Everything a good porter should be.

Tastes as good as it smells. hoppier than I expected almost slightly fruity. Perfect

Looks good, smells good and tastes good. Goes down well.

Burleigh Black Giraffe Black Coffee Lager 5%
This is a one off beer brewed with ground coffee beans, American hops and lager yeast.

Black with a good looking head

Smells, unsurprisingly, like iced coffee. Coffee smell makes other aromas undetectable.

Tastes lighter than I expected it too, but I supppose it is a lager, strong bitter coffee taste but very clean.

Not a bad beer but one was enough for me.

Sierra Nevada Southern Hemisphere Harvest Fresh Hop Ale 6.7%
8082039217_844eb15abd_b.jpg

Lovely orange colour which goes well with the cushions on the setee, nice cream coloured head.

Smells like citrus and pine. Hops & hops. SN always do great hoppy aromas.

A taste sensation, pale malt with a great hit of hops. I love this style of IPA.

I am a big fan of Sierra Nevada and this is another excellent beer from them and at 6.7 % it will get you properly fucked up without you realising.

I posted on the other thread about the different beers the Newcastle Brown Ale people are doing. Anyone tried them?

Anyone tried the new ones that the Newcastle Brown people are doing at the moment?-

There was another one in there too but I can't remember what it was.

The Winter one is 5.2%. :)

I was sitting with a cold beer and I remembered this thread.

Chucking down a couple of these, easy drinking.

Not too shabby

Had a half (yes a HALF) of Moor brewery JJJ IPA last night, it was a half because it is a whopping 9%! and a school night - was lovely - very hoppy, packed a punch:D

Has the same thing happened to Tribute? A few years ago it was quite difficult to get hold of, but I see it bottled quite a lot now and my local has had it on draught for the last year or so.

Badseed, you drink some decent beer there :)

Can I recommend Durham Brewery 106 if you can find it:

We are visiting UK in August, we will be in Durham at some point as my kids recokon there is some Harry Potter shite there. Also, my folks live in Middlesbrough so we are not far. I will try to check this out.

Good parts of the world for decent beer. :)
