Nah, a lot of ale is hopped these days - just the old definition. As i said, nothing wrong with a thread on beer, just posted up that one because it has good recommendations.
 
we went to the hawkshead beer festival on friday

my pick - the damson & vanilla porter at 8.5%. a sweet & bitter barley wine with the usual espresso / chocolate notes, with a superb fruity kick from the damsons.

When I saw that you were there this weekend I nearly had bloody heart failure. :eek:
I was convinced they had their festival in the summer. I had a panic stricken moment or two because I was sure I was there last summer and a few of us have made a plan to go again, this summer. Calm has been restored, though, after a quick flit over to their website - there is also one in July.

Did you also go to that very excellent pub in the village - The Eagle and Child - with all the stuff hanging off the ceiling? I love that place.

no, but i stayed there last weekend - my aunt lives in stavely and we'd had a big family bash there the previous saturday (which was how i was alerted to the festival). it is indeed a fine boozer - when we caught the last train home at the end of the night, there was a couple of old boys who'd come from preston (50 minutes & 16 quid on the train) just to drink in the eagle & child, and hadn't bothered with hawkshead...

You stayed there? In that very pub? I am officially jealous. How very splendid!

I've got a question, then - how did you get on (with) the train - from what I can see, it's a request stop.
Is the accepted etiquette to jump up and down like a loony on the platform when the train comes or is there some more sophisticated way of alerting the driver that you want to get on? When we went last year, it was on a CAMRA trip by coach, but the people who want to come with me this year are not CAMRA bods, so we reckon the train is the way to go.
 
it was fine - we were a little concerned about the request stop thing ourselves, but the train stopped without any need for us to flag it down. there was quite a lot of people on the platform though, i guess with it being the last train.

you're from preston way aren't you espresso? you should come to my mate's beer festival in may - should be a similar number of ales on, and it's alway a fine bash. http://newcontinental.net/whats-on/8th-continental-beer-festival

Last night I had 2 witch something or other and 2 bishops something or other (not finger).

They all seem to be a witch or bishop something or other or hobgoblin.

The witch is wych from Wychwood brewery isn't it. They do have an obsession with goblins, giants and witches with hobgoblin, king goblin, green goblin (cider), goliath and wychcraft

I got a mixed Wychwood box on Monday, with a couple of other boxes of real ales, for a work thing. The type where normally you only ever get a choice of red or white wine. I've never had so many complements about anything I've ever done at work. I was standing by the drinks table and people kept coming in going 'look they've got PROPER BEER!'.:D
 
Thornbridge Jaipur, excellent summer IPA - bit of fruitiness and fair heft of hops, definitely worth a try.

This time I thought I'd try a Lambic.
Lambic is a fascinating beer it is brewed in the Senne valley in Belgium. The fermentation is started in the open air using wild airborne yeast found in the reigon.
The local wild yeast causes it to have a cidery/sour taste. Very unique.
So this is my first pure Lambic, although I have had cherry sweetened version (known as Kriek) before.

Lindemans Gueuze Cuvée René 5% served at 6 degrees
Comes in a thick green bottle sealed with foil, crown seal and cork.

Pours golden and hazy almost like apple juice but more yellowy. Reasonalble head which shrinks but stays put.
Smells of rotten, sour fruit and a bit yeasty. Reminds me of being 14 and having snakebite made with woodpecker cider.

Tastes very light and fruity. Green apples and sour lemon with a nice tartness. Other flavours too but I found it hard to put my finger on them.
Nicely carbonated, maybe a little bit like champagne. Unusual.

Final verdict: I had no idea what to expect from this, but I knew it would be different.
Fairly refreshing, inoffensive enough. I like the flavours and the sourness but one is enough for me. I would buy it again though.
Those crafty Belgians make some good beer.

I'd just like to disagree with everyone about Special Brew. It's a perfectly good beer as it happens, I just don't happen to like it any more, after a few too many round about, er, all of the 90s. :oops:

When I did the BJCP beer judging course, I got to the Bock section: Northern German beer originally from Einbeck, and made from Munich and Vienna malts. After bock there's doppelbock, doubly strong. Then after that, Eisbock - an extremely strong full and malty freeze distilled lager (abv 7-33). All the examples I had the misfortune of having to judge tasted EXACTLY like spesh. :D
