Bates Motel (prequel to Psycho)

hash tag

Books, not bombs
It's been mentioned in pay for view subscription channel threads but, pleased to see it's now on BBC. Many nods to Psycho in there. Just seen the first two episodes and looking good. Much more violent than Psycho.

It’s obviously not really a prequel in that sense. Although the production design treads a gorgeous line between the contemporary setting and the 1960 original.

I suppose if you imagine the novel hadn’t been turned into a film until today, then it works as a prequel in that setting.

Great performances. Beautiful to watch... but - I don’t know - I’m not sure that the central relationship credibly leads to the adult Norman Bates. It’s all a bit sympathetic.

I watched the first series when it first started on Netflix and really enjoyed it but started the second series, got bored and gave up.
That may well have been my mood at the time though.
I might give it another go.

Norman is the least interesting character. Although Freddie Highmore does his best. Vera Farmiga absolutely steals the show. It's a slow burn ... sometimes the other characters, intrigues and sceneries are reminiscent of Twin Peaks.

In parts but it's dealing with a fair few issues, domestic violence, abuse and mental illness. Although you might have less sympathy with him by the last 2 seasons!

Reckon the show is quite underrated, but can completely understand it's not everyone's cuppa etc.

Norma is the main draw for me. Fascinating, strong, resourceful, manipulative, frustrating and tragic.

It pays lip service to those issues, but it’s his mother that I think gets off too lightly. Yes she’s irrational and it’s dysfunctional as mother-son relationships go, but Bates was based on Ed Gein, iirc, and his mother was monstrous. That’s how you end up with a Norman Bates.

Don't want to spoiler, but wouldn't exactly say his mother gets off too lightly...
