Bands with a big reputation that are (musically) shite

Ramones have plenty of melodic songs of their own.
I want you around
I can't make it on time
I'd argue that the first LP is already pretty poppy .
Basement, I wanna be your boyfriend.

I mean, my first reaction to this was "that Motown tradition that song comes out of is very much not one with a strong tie between artist/songwriter and song, it's like trying to say who Heard It Through The Grapevine 'belongs' to, or any of the Holland-Dozier-Holland songs, so it's their song as much as it is anyone's." Then I looked at the somewhat alarming wikipedia entry for it, and if by that you mean that it only had Joey on it and none of the other Ramones then fair criticism, I didn't know that. But it came out on a Ramones record, so I think it's still a Ramones song. And Rock'n'Roll Radio is unimpeachably Ramones.

Yeah, I think there's something to that.
It's not their song in that it's a cover of a ronnettes song. Cos Phil spector. It's a great version tbf.

I think that most pop music is not meant to live beyond its era. The Ramones were good at the time, if you were young. They were a refreshing contrast to what had gone before. As you mature, and the world of popular musical culture moves on, then particular artists lose their relevance. It galls me to see people wearing tee-shirts with the Ramones on them, when the wearer is too young to have known the band when it was active, and the tee-shirt was made after the band members died.

Used to wear a Grateful Dead t-shirt in the 80s, despite not being too young to appreciate the band.

See plenty of youth wearing Nirvana t-shirts and Rolling Stones. Delighted it irks folks.
