Axeman attacks people on train in southern Germany

We don't disagree on that, Phil.

I'm just saying that "The West" shouldn't throw open borders through a sense of guilt.

I'm not sure they have. Even the biggest influx - to Germany - was originally based purely on instrumentalism regarding taking in people who in the majority were middle-class professionals and their families, and using them eventually to help prop up the infrastructure in parts of Germany that have been dying because of internal emigration.

The German system does have programmes for underage migrants, but they can only access them if they have adequate, strong documents with which they can prove their age (this is Germany, after all, the land of 'your papers are not in order').

The German authorities have also been known to x-ray the wrists of asylum seekers, in order to ascertain their true age (I'm not sure if x-raying wrists can actually do that, but that's why they do it).

It's a contentious "dating" method. Some local authorities in the UK tried to get it introduced, because they believed that many of their"juvenile" asylum seekers were actually adults, but it's so hit and miss - establishing a baseline for a particular ethnicity itself is very difficult - that the few cases where it was tried got kicked out of court. Rightly so in my opinion, given the possible variation is usually given as +/-3 years or so.

They most certainly haven't, but there are plenty of people (including many on this website) who advocate a relaxing of border controls to the extent that we'd not know the backgrounds of who's coming in.

That's a bit of a different thing to "open borders 'cos of guilt", though.

The sad thing is that one of the most pressing reasons we don't know the backgrounds of who is coming in, is because we ("the west") have caused so much chaos in the ME/NA region in the last 20 years or so, that the old Sykes-Picot lines separating everything into handy states doesn't hold true, and in many of those now-crumbling states, the intelligence infrastructure is either so fucked, or so in control of a single faction of the state, that it's nigh on impossible to work any kind of cross check to make sure Ahmed Aziz is actually an Iraqi formerly resident in Basra, as his passport states, or is actually Mani Bouhcele, Tunisian and former resident of Tunis.

We're reaping the whirlwind.

We're reaping the whirlwind.
Only for a short period. European borders will be in lock-down sooner or later. I don't think it'll be long until European countries either refuse to accept any "refugees" or simply permanently confine those they do take. :(

There are many on this site who believe in no borders at all .
