Avebury solstice, any good?

I'm going to be a bit controversial and confrontational here, but I say leave it to the ACTUAL pagans, rather than just go along because it's a bit new age-y and that sounds like fun.
Sorry, had to say it. My family are all pagans and get a bit fed up with people who have no actual belief in that treating it like some sort of festival or rave.
If you actually want to celebrate any solstice, equinox, or anything in between, get in contact with a local group and find out what they have organised or are going to as a group, don't just turn up at an ancient monument and expect to hijack it in to some sort of mass party, not everyone there is interested in having a wild time or a rave and you could ruin it for them. You can celebrate a solstice or equinox anywhere btw - pretty much just go out and look at dawn or sunset and appreciate it, you don't need to be anywhere special for it - nature has no cathedrals.
I dunno man I've been gatecrashing christmas for years, with glazed cherries and advocat (yeah snowballs are still cool urban!)

'Not solstice but I've booked a dawn visit to Stonehenge later in July, one where you can go into the stones. Can't wait.

I was pondering going to an ancient monument next week when on holiday but not sure if I can arsed as it will be on my own, have to drive, can’t have a beer etc

I “did” Stonehenge about 15 years ago. It was good.

There were a lot of yanks doing the “European tour” and a lot of local kids just having a good overnight piss up.

But it was good. Pagan friends assure me that Avebury is a lot more real.

I couldnt get tomorrow off work so I decided I can't be arsed. That said, touching the stones many years ago at solstice was absolutely incredible and I highly recommend it if you can get there!

My plan was a bit basic, turn up, get pissed and stoned, buy coke, stay up all night. I sort of forgot I am closer to sixty than fifty. Dozed on some cold hard ground! Coke was better than London though. The kids in attendance were really welcoming to me. The sunrise this morning was the best for years and years.

The police stopped me in their wagon when I was returning from the party, walking on the main road. They expressed concern with me being fucked and wearing all black on a 50mph road. They gave me a plain high viz and asked me to give it to a cop in the village which I did, rather chilled they were.

BUMP!

I'm thinking of doing Avebury this year, though I'm not great at standing for long periods and my joints are a bit fucked. What I was wondering is whether you can get close to the site by bus or even driving? Also, I'm guessing it looks a bit less 'managed' than Solstice at Stonehenge?

Get a bus right there.

It’s not really managed at all. Police are relaxed. No fences. No rules really.
