Avebury solstice, any good?

Only been there once a few years back and it was pretty relaxed, a bit of cheering, chanting and then the druids out for the dawn/sunrise blessings. Best part was that you have the pub just over the road from the main central part of the Avebury stones and you can walk around and touch the stones and see the avenue and other stone layouts/formations around the area.

I think it had a late closing but not beyond midnight but they had a food van in the car park doing the usual burgers, sausages and hot drinks.

That's what I did and looking at some of the Youtube links for last year it doesn't seem to have stopped. Your only issue will be parking as it is limited and if you park in the NT car park it does cost a fair bit.

I did this quite a few years ago - maybe 9 or 10? It was lots of fun. Quite a lot of people. TopCat - we did exactly that - dossed down with a sleeping bag in the circle. It was cold though - had been a very very hot day and a clear, starry night. We got cold and wet. We were also young and drunk so it was fine. When we woke up someone had made a crop circle in the adjoining field.

Used to live close enough to Avebury to go there after the pubs shut, sometimes. Also West Kennet Long Barrow & Silbury Hill sometimes.

Great days.

Give me an alternative thats in the general area if the Avebury plod are policing puff and that heavily?

my gf likes going to Avebury for the festivals. i've been but i'll leave her to it this year. relaxed vibes, plenty of chanting, druids, hippies, jamming. lots of folks wishing each other a happy solstice. not too heavy, police wise.
pub across the road. no probs sleeping rough within the stone circle.
you'll have fun!

I'm not going this year but I've always enjoyed Avebury for the solstice, despite the last few times being wet!

I often arrive by cycling there on my mountain bike along the Ridgeway - I like to imagine how through millenia thousands of others have made a pilgrimage at the same time of the year, and along the same route.

I've found that over the years it got more controlled, and that it gets harder to pitch your tent. The last time I arrived after a six hour ride, I went to pitch my tent in the picnic area and I got turned away.

Anyway it's a great way to pass the longest day. I like to mark my equinoxes and solstices, often by getting of my face, which I'm sure is a practice which goes back to prehistory!

It was lovely. Very progressive ride down there. Free secure parking. Lots of great people. Very relaxed. Gorgeous weather. Amazing dawn.

The police were divvies just staring at traffic and providing a rather camp contribution as they took selfies at dawn and did a few movie cop moves.

Had to crash out in a field for a few hours on the way back. Home now, and just slept for 16 hours. :)
