Any electricians here? (Hardwiring a cooker advice)

I'd be pissed off that they used surface mount sockets and visible mini trunking in a kitchen!

Not happy about it. Pushes appliances out even further, thus reducing work surface space

Don't know why they couldn't have moved them further up under cupboards

That's one serious consumer unit !
When I first moved in I had three Bakelite fuses in which I would insert whatever wire I had lying around.
It used to smell of fish whenever I switched on the immersion heater for a bath.
When one day it started spitting out glowing bits of Bakelite, I put a bucket of water under it and finally went up Wickes and bought a new unit.

I still have only one ringmain for the whole house - that has the immersion heater spurred off it too, one lighting circuit, and one cooker spur that I have all my kitchen appliances running off.

I have over a dozen 4 way blocks in my main room, three in the kitchen and two in the bathroom. :D

That's a fairly new one. Old one was much smaller.

Had to all be moved up an inch recently because it was sitting right on top of EDF meter and they needed to replace unit. It's been a pain in the arse getting it done. Took nearly 3 months, after 1 guy came and ripped off old cupboard surrounding it, another guy came to inspect, more guys came to move it, EDF came to change meter, another guy to measure up for new cupboard and then finally a kitchen cupboard was provided.

Takes up so much space in the hallway as well, but I managed to convince guy to cut it back so I get more light from the back door which I didn't get before.

I had to put up with it looking like this for 3 months, which was nice because of the light DSC00527.JPG

Now it's like this

and doesn't come forward of the back door like last one did DSC00536.JPG

So, in conclusion, when I go to B&Q or Homebase, I need to ask sales assistant for 1 (or 1.5?) metres of 6mm cooker cable yes?

Or do I have to word it differently as I'll have no idea what I'm after exactly

Get 2 meters of 6mm twin core and earth cable. Dont forget the earth shield. Use a good sharp pair of snips.

So, 2 meters of 6mm twin core and earth cable and ? metre of earth sleeving please Mr Salesman?

What am I going for? 1, 1.5 or 2 metres?

Is a meter enough if it's got to stretch to new socket?

(I don't know where connections are on cooker, middle, towards the bottom etc.)

Or anyone that knows anything about electrics or know what the difference between a 6 and 10 amp cable is?
Use the fattest cable and the most conservative circuit breaker option you can get away with.

40-45 A circuit breaker for a larger cooker on a separate ring main (flippy switch in the consumer unit), use 10A solid core cable if you can get it.

Do NOT touch anything unless the main switch for the box is off.

One metre is probably not enough and as it's sold by the metre get two,in B&Q you can probably get 100mm of earth sleeving in a little packet which will probably cost the same as a metre in a electrical shop.Keep in mind you need some slack in the cable to pull out the cooker for cleaning/maintenance etc.

Fuck off, I ain't reading all that, and you're just confusing me more with talk of circuit breakers and ring mains and 10A solid core cable :D

Right, so 2 metres of 6mm twin core and earth cable and 100mm of earth sleeving please Mr Salesman

Is the 100mm the diameter of the sleeve or the length? :hmm::oops:

No the length ,sleeving comes in two different sizes (commonly, there are actually a great deal of sizes available for industrial wiring) get the larger of the two.You only need enough for each end of the termination four or six inches is fine.

How long do you envisage the tails will be, like?

E2a oh you're on about the twin and earth not the sleeving  :D
I'm not sure if there is a termination below the cooker switch or if it needs to be wired via the trunking back to the switch,if that's the case 2 metres will do it.The cost of cable for such a short length is only a difference of a few quid, better to have too much than not enough.

Normally you wire from the switch to an outlet and then a cable from the cooker terminates in the outlet aswell. You don't wire from the switch direct into the oven with the twin and earth.

I think you missed my edit also (I got wrong end of stick)

Nearly "I'll have 2metres of you finest 6mm twin and earth cooker cable plus 100/150 mm (four or six inches) of the larger size of earth sleeving please my good man/woman".
