Americans: why don't you use kettles?

British people, Why Would You Boil A Cup Of Coffee!?
A significant proportion of the British population think that instant coffee is somehow acceptable, it's a kind of reverse snobbery. They would almost without exception turn up their noses at instant tea though so any argument they might put forward in favour of the horrors of instant coffee is entirely without merit and can safely be ignored.

However, there's nothing stopping you using two kettles and boiling half a cup of water in each one.

I now have an image of a massively parallel kettle that plugs into all the sockets in your house and can boil a cup of coffee in a second.

a massively parallel processing appliance? * - it will never catch on

* a VERY niche data geek reference

A lot of people prefer the taste of granular coffee. Like me. :p

Nescafe Espresso Instant is the best instant I've tried. It's very nice.

In other news, I tried making an American styled 'grilled' cheese last night in the frying pan. I need to refine my technique because the bread was perfectly browned but the cheese hadn't melted properly. I might go back to the panini press instead.

My house stank afterwards. I have no extractor hood, so I don't fry much.

Of course it's acceptable if people want to drink it. Snobbery doesn't have anything to do with it, I like the taste of instant coffee and I like the fact its even less hassle to make than a cup of tea. I also like real coffee but I can't drink it all day because it's bad for my guts.

If you were round someone's house and they offered you a coffee and it turned out to be instant, would you accuse them of 'reverse snobbery' or would you shut the fuck up and drink what you're given?

What would you do if you were served instant tea?

Not that i often visit anyone it's very rare ime that i have ever been in anyone's house that actually served 'real' coffee....with spookyf on this one

As opposed to tea in bags. Which isn't instant tea.

So what the hell is instant tea? And who on earth is too lazy or impatient to stick a teabug in a cup and pour hot water in? You've still got to wait for it to cool down a bit anyway.

e2a: I bet the answer to my second question is 'Americans' isn't it? I bet Americans have instant tea, those fucking barbarians

British had it too but never took off because it's about as close to tea as instant coffee is to coffee.

The powder that you get in many vending machines is instant tea.

It is available for purchase domestically, but despite an optimistic launch never really took off in the UK.

:( its a thing.

tea bags are bad enough.

Jeebus life is fucked up enough without getting all het up about fucking tea and coffee..................don't actually have any coffee at all in my flat

That's the stuff.

Frank would drink it and shut the fuck up if offered it in someone's house.

You used to be able to get instant tea-with-milk in the 1980s. My friend's mum used to drink it and it was every bit as terrible as it sounds. Think it was called 'Lift' ?

someone should invent coffee bags
I've seen these in hotels. Like a cardboard thing that folds out and hooks over the edge of the cup, with a bag of ground coffee suspended from it into which you pour your hot water. Dead useful for camping, I wish more places did them .

I have not explained it very well, have I?

Yes, Lift, that was the stuff. There was a huge marketing campaign in the 80s. I tried it, like anyone would. But never finished the jar. And I hate waste. That's how bad it was.

I have no idea if that brand is still around, but the PG Tips one is in a supermarket near you.

You haven't, no. :D

I've seen those, too, though. They're mini filters without the filter pot.

You used to get those ones with the plastic funnel thing. But very wasteful.
