Amazon Prime streaming video recommendations thread

So american horror story = good, american horror stories = don't bother?
Where are these streaming?

American Horror Story (for us) is streaming on Disney plus (at least, in Japan) as is the spin-off. Which haven't seen yet. Have seen the first 8 seasons, of the parent show, season 4 was my least favourite although Jessie Lange is magnificent as always.

Just be warned, these are a different kettle of fish compared to Them or the Mike Flanagan shows.

What are the Mike Flanagan shows?

Mike Flanagan (born May 20, 1978) is an American filmmaker, best known for his horror work. Flanagan wrote, directed, produced, and edited the horror films Absentia (2011), Oculus (2013), Hush, Before I Wake, Ouija: Origin of Evil (all 2016), Gerald's Game (2017), and Doctor Sleep (2019). He created, wrote, produced, and served as showrunner on the Netflix horror series The Haunting of Hill House (2018), The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020), Midnight Mass (2021), The Midnight Club (2022), and The Fall of the House of Usher (2023), also directing and editing some episodes of each.

Of that lot I think I have have only seen doctor sleep.
I think Midnight Mass was once in my 'to view' list though.
I thought Midnight Mass was brilliant myself. Comparisons with Haunting at Hill
House found online often are skewed, as they are quite different in tone and even subject.

I don't know if it left netflix before I got a chance to see it or I took it off my list. Sounds like something decent enough to watch while washing up.

Just finished 'Leonard Cohen - I'm Your Man'. Crivens, not too everyone's taste obviously but what a songwriter/poet and a totally astonishing performance by Anthony, of whom I'd heard but had never heard perform. There's a Rufus chap who can warble as well !

Having just caught up with season 3 of The Legend of Vox Machina it started slow but the most recent episodes are genuinely very good - they've really done well pulling together the odd threads of a D&D campaign into a TV narrative.

After working our way through the "top 10 in the UK" offerings. and the "Because you watched this" suggestions, God knows what Amazon think we are :hmm: .....We decided to go back to what used to be our favourites from the last decade to see how our tastes may have changed.

I went first under the Cop/Police heading...yeah, don't go there, we like to put things in boxes, it makes it easier for our old brain memory :D
Anyway I decided on " End of watch"......I'd forgotten how much I loved it....what a rollercoaster of emotions...I laughed, teared up, shouted, felt scared, het up, angry, shocked, wanted to smack people, wanted to hug people....add to that the cracking soundtrack. It's even made me go back and listen to Public Enemy FGS! :D
I don't know if it's because I'm a lot older now but it's given me a deeper respect for what police have to face every day, literally the next car you pull over could be your last!....more so American than British regarding guns and gangs.
I really enjoyed it....sometimes it pays to go back :D

And just because I like it :p

A Million Ways to Die in the West

In my defense, I wanted to watch something stupid. But christ almighty was it bad. I have a soft spot for Seth McFarlane sometimes, but this is not his best work. Family Guy can still sometimes get a laugh, and I loved The Orville. But this is just merde.

The moustache song is good though.

Sea Fever. Seemed to be fairly low budget, but a reasonable tale told well.

Firebrand - with a fairly loose grip on actual truth, still very entertaining. Jude Law put in a good show, and Alicia Vikander can do no wrong for me.

My Old Ass
It wouldn't be of note, except that it's well executed and comes in under 90 minutes. Decent fluff that knows not to outstay its welcome.
Bonus for being filmed where I spent most of my summers growing up.

I quite liked the first 20 minutes of My Old Ass but the kabbess didn’t — she said she found the characters too annoying — so we gave up on it. Did it end up going anywhere interesting?

No, not really. If you didn't find it mildly charming in the first 20 minutes, nothing happens that will change your mind later.

Watched Endings Beginnings last night which was about a young woman figuring out her life and navigating various relationships.
Would recommend if people want a film just to put on and not have to watch too carefully.
