Alternatives to AirBnB?

Orang Utan

They cannot crucify you if your hand is in a fist
I remember there was a time before Air BnB when you could hire apartments online, but I think the last time I did so was in 2006. Does anyone have any more recent experience of hiring a holiday home without having to resort to an enshittified Air BnB?

Will probably be looking for a hol in Spain or The Canaries, but not necessarily.

You can still just search self catering in any given area and see what comes up. Another way is to search in AirBnB anyway, but then look for the property’s own website and go to that direct.

Booking.com is alright too and at least theyre registered and paying tax. Just gotta set the search filters appropriately.

Yes Sykes cottages is good for uk based stuff, certainly as good as anyone else. But I always try and google the property name to see if they have their own website and try to book direct

If I was going abroad I would probably look for a self catering apartment available via a package with flight as think easyJet or similar do these

Sykes is always significantly more expensive than cottages.com in my experience, seems to be less variation in prices - you can sometimes find great reductions in cottages.com.

Looking into UK places now for short breaks for a non-driver and lazy cyclist, so this is all useful. Thanks all

Not a caravan. Need a big double bed in a building with a proper toilet. No good at camping either.
Caravan I stayed in near Norwich was a whopper - and had double bed, was fully plumbed in [toilet & shower].

Most of the "family" vans for hire would fit your requirements ...

Although, maybe something like a chain hotel in an all-year resort would suit.
Booking.com or trivago or laterooms.com might be able to find you a bargain ...

God no. I hate hotels, especially the idea of all-inclusive ones. And I avoid resorts at all costs.
Self-catering contained apartments only for me. I know I’m fussy but I have good reasons to be.

You’re thinking of tourers. Sites don’t rent those out. (Though there are companies that rent out tourers to tour with, but that’s not what’s being recommended here). Think static. Those are the ones that get rented out at sites.

Yeah I was recently viewing some static caravans for sale. Fully equipped kitchen, Two bathrooms, three beds, central heating. I’ve had far worse hotels or rented accommodation. Holiday parks require that they are kept to a certain Hyacinth Bouquet standard.

Aye, I think I know what they are. Like Alan Partridge’s static caravan, but larger. I used to work next to Thistlebrook in Thamesmead, which is something like the largest permanent travellers’ site in the UK and has some massive luxurious mansionesque static homes in it.

My uncle has recently moved into a static caravan as part of his retirement plan. It's a decent space but his doesn't have central heating so suffering a bit with cold and damp :( that's not a holiday though so irrelevant!

Holiday parks and hotels have the problem of there being other people around all the time. They’re not places to blissfully seclude oneself from the ratrace and that’s what holidays are for, from my point of view

wasn't thinking of all-inclusive types ...
I do quite a bit of travelling for work and tend to stay in smaller travelodges / premier inns.
Although, that tends to be by car rather than train as the places I'm going to aren't usually connected to the passenger rail network.
Sometimes a small pub that does self-catering cottages will turn up in searches ...
I hate the big holiday places and generally avoid them. Just want a bed, and somewhere nearby for food.

Aye, have used pub lodgings before and they’re way more preferable to most standard hotel accommodation.
And since Travelodge/Premier Inn have been mentioned, I think they can be more preferable to a lot of much more expensive hotels, if you get a quiet room and there are no groups booked at the same time. Their beds are way more comfier than my own and many airbnb/cottage beds.
