Whilst you're right that I care very little for your spat, it's not being ignored that I hate, but bullies.

you've been picking on the wrong targets.

The fault here lies with the government's and big aid agencies for causing / ignoring this problem and leaving it up to inexperienced and in many cases vulnerable volunteers to attempt to help as best they can. ETA and without that help there would be pretty much no support at all for the vast majority of people in the camp, meaning we'd have had scores of refugees dying on our doorstep last winter for want of the tents, sleeping bags, clothes, boots, and food that the volunteer effort you've slagged off managed to provide for them.

The fault is not with the well meaning but vulnerable volunteers who've found themselves in over their heads without the appropriate training or back up that would usually be in place in such situations. They're likely to also end up as traumatised victims of this situation who in many cases will suffer some level of PTSD as a result of their experiences.

That's basically what's wrong with your entire approach to this thread, and what's got people's backs up so much.

If there are any examples of people who've gone over specifically to exploit people for sex then that's a very different matter, but that's not what was being discussed on the facebook posts on which the report and this thread were based.

Post-Blairism, and the whole third way "professionalisation" of much of the charity sector, government and big aid agencies are sometimes the same thing, given the interconnectedness of the agencies with government, and their dependence on govt grants and contracts. hence, if the govt want Calais ignored, it gets ignored by Big Charity.

I met a woman in Indonesia years ago who lived in complete poverty in European terms, but we had a loving mutually beneficial relationship for a few years, I don't believe there was a power imbalance because of our nationalities.

Certain generic assumptions lie behind the holding of "western" nationalities, such as (relative) wealth. Such assumptions - whether they're rooted in reality or not - can influence the power relations between people.

There's no getting away from the fact that she put two and two together to come up with five, rushed to throw around serious allegations (making herself look very silly in the process), for which she was too proud to apologise when she was shown to be utterly wrong.
