Academic decision woes

Don't know!

It's OU and I did intro to social sciences many years ago. Leaning towards following up with psychology or more sociology but there a more than one of each to choose from, and would like a side order of statistics or economics. And a bit of everything else too.

Statistics is the most boring subject I've ever studied. Avoid.

Just for info like.

I think sociology, history and economics sounds like a good combo. Also look at "international development" or similar if that comes up. It might well be part of any one of those subjects, but was considered separate when I studied at the OU.

eta@quimmy. I did U213 with the OU (http://www3.open.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/course/u213.htm) and it was pretty interesting stuff.

Well it is an option and does look interesting. (I so happen to work in ID anyway which would probably help my scores!) It all looks interesting, that's the problem.

Yeah, I found that. I knew I had to do a certain set of computery type stuff (even though I wasn't doing a named degree) so had very few slots for everything else I was interested in. The philosophy stuff stood out for me as well, but I couldn't fit it in.

What else are you considering?

Well I have a booklet (out of date but the principle stands) with about 20 courses as suitable follow ons but there is a whole website. As I said i'm leaning towards psychology or more sociology next.

Yay a fellow sociologist  Well I have the same problem, it all looks interesting and worthwhile, and it's a drag having to decide what to leave out. I think I'll probably stick with my choices now of Sociology, History & Economics... but I'm torn at missing the chance to do a Language, Psychology or Literature :hmm:

if you can't decide what to study, how do you cope with the important decisions in life? how do you manage to order a drink in a pub or get a can in an offie? do you get paralytic trying to work out what you want and having a pint of each?

it's understandable you want to have a go at everything, but part of the purpose of your course is to facilitate independent study you may go on to in the future, where you can approach the topics you have not formally addressed.

That's a bit harsh. These things are difficult decisions imo, with long term ramifications.

And yes, I can never pick a beer and never pick a bloody curry either but I did manage to get a first.

i quite understand. my career's been severely affected by my choosing to studying dante and his age as a third year specialization and not the turkish wars in the seventeenth century. but that's bloody life, you can't do everything you might like but you might want to consider firstly what you're interested in now and what you think you might need for work in a few years time and see if you can strike a happy balance.

Oh right well I covered that a little in the OP. I even made a thread before this one all about the difficulty I have making even simple decisions, it is a problem for me yes. Making this thread and writing my thoughts out has helped the process a bit though - your input has not.
