4 to 5k to spend on an estate car?

FFS. Brakes went. Two new break lines and labour were £212. Couldn't take it to my normal mechanic as that would have been a long drive on dodgy brakes. Also need the pipe to cat doing, brak ehousing and another bit underneath. They quoted £350, although it's going to the normal place Wednesday.

Dammed if I do, dammed if I don't. Can't afford to lease a car, especially with the millage I do. Can't actually afford to take on the debt for a slightly newer one. Can't get anything for it anyway due to bodywork damage. Cars can be a proper ball ache eh?

yer travails with this one sound like a nightmare. the big things give you the option to walk away and start afresh, the little things drain your wallet and make you question your decisions. had it with my XC70- when the engine mamngement lights started flashing and the injection gubbins started defaulting to limp , I knew would take a ( well documented )grand to sort out & that would not be the end of it. PX'd the fucker for some other fool to have a go with it

Get shot. Some mug on ebay will buy it. All the good E36s have been cut up, modded, drifted and crashed so the yoot are moving on the E46 now.

Sorry, I have no idea what this is. 50's, American? 4 doors as well

That's an absolute beauty . . . I'm not joking, is lovely

Imagine the light in that cabin. Wonderful.

Did you look at the article the picture was taken from? A revolutionary car indeed. I love the roll top windows, a nightmare for mass production I'd've thought but a stunning concept

Here's my new to me estate car.
Toyota hybrid tourer estate ...
4.7 litres of petrol per 100km.

It is a very steady comfortable drive.
Bucket loads of space for all my art stuff in the boot. The most comfortable seats I've ever sat on in a car...heated too...roll on the winter cold bum.

I've never owned an estate car before but I've always liked them and have fond childhood memories of an old blue Ford Cortina Estate.

I picked up my new one on Monday. After not even getting a year from the Avensis I swallowed hard, went to the bank and borrowed more then thread title. It's a 66 plate Insignia estate 2L diesel in the 170hp flavor. The newest thing I've ever owned by a long long way. It's got so many screens and buttons it's like driving a starship. And only costs £30 a year to tax. :)

Great choice, reliable motor that goes well and is packed with toys. Sadly it seems that evidence that has come through in the past 24 hours suggests you should have bought an SUV instead ;)

I contemplated it, but the ones that have the same carrying capacity as an estate are way out my price range and I'm quite liking do over 50mpg as opposed to the 34 I got out the Avensis. Although I've stayed off that thread tbf.

New car time coming up. Again. I'm cursed. I bought a 2016 plate Insignia earlier this year for just under 7k. I was hoping that by borrowing some cash I'd get something more reliable, but it's been far far from it. In and out the garage. It's a shame as it's really nice car to drive and very well specced for the money. Guy I got it from has also given up, but is decent and will take it back. Just trying to decide what to go for. I'm not totally closed to another Insignia, but Im also a bit nervous after this experience. Other obvious choices are Mondeos and Avensis, but wondering if there is anything else worth considering.

Oh mate, thats a bit shit :(

Had one eye on this thread over the years (never had an estate and always fancied one) all the best with yer hunt! Got anything in mind at all (other than not coming with a curse)?

Then take it to Peak Alfa from there on in, sorted. Possibly.

Ha. It's a bit different and would no doubt be hoot. I guess I could have a lot of fun with this budget, but as I've borrowed the money the aim is for something as reliable and cheap to run as possible. That said the then Vauxhall does have 170bhp. I'm just scared to use it in case the bloody light comes on again.

It's had its head gasket done but now is just haunted by airflow sensor errors. It's had 3 different ones and on Vauxhalls advice the turbo intercooler as well. Fustrating thing is I threw an extra 450 at it when the engine was in bits for its timing bets. Although quite glad to have got it from some one 6 months down the line who will replace it.

Yeah. I do like Ford's so another Mondeo. If have to borrow a bit more to get one of a similar age though which is frustrating as I'm contemplating taking a massive pay cut to retrain in something at the moment.

Exactly. It's an Alfa, it's not yet average euro rot box. It has style, character, personality

It's also ten years old. If I could afford to treat it like most cars that I've owned, which is shrug when I get a big repair bill, I'd be all over that. But I've got my sensible hat on. :(

It turns out Peak Alfa just do racing now, not servicing for ordinary mortals. I think there's a specialist in Sale (MVC) but I don't know them. I would be much more comfortable owning one with a good specialist nearby.

Bit late to the party with this...

I realised three months into my never ending engine swap that I needed a run around

saw this locally.

Honda Accord V-tech estate. 2004

138k on the clock. In reasonable nick and a genuine seller. MOT till October 2021, one advisory on last MOT
Leather seats and electric everything. Watertight and bonus lo roof racks

close up it’s got lots of touched up corners

goes like a stabbed rat compared to a Land Rover

the real eye opener is for such a skinny looking car is it’s insane boot capacity. I bought it with longboard transportation in mind (9’4) but it swallows anything you throw at it

1200 quid and hopefully with a reasonable MOT pass in October I can probably knock it on for minimal loss

That is impressive load space. I’ve had an Accord in the past (actually it was a gift for Mrs D) they are really good cars. With a little looking after they last forever.

That looks a great buy.

I've finally given up on my Insignia. Newest, most expensive car I've bought and the dam thing was in and out the garage constantly for six months. 170 bhp and scared to put my foot down most of the time.

As far as clichés go, ‘Japanese cars are reliable as fuck’ must be a contender for the most truthful cliché ever award. So if stylish looks or higher performance aren’t one’s priority, the aforementioned Honda would likely be excellent value for money.

In the antiques industry where I work Volvo estates have always been the go-to car of the type, and by all accounts also very reliable. Though I suspect significantly pricier than many other brands. Then again 5k would still be likely to get you a Volvo that would last you far longer than younger cars from many other European brands.

Is this true still at least with Avensis vs Mondeo? My googling seems to suggest it's mixed. May be able to stretch a little to buy one of these over the Insignia. More Mondeos about of course. Or maybe I just got unlucky with the Vauxhall and lightening rarely hits the same place twice. :hmm:
