4 to 5k to spend on an estate car?

Is this true still at least with Avensis vs Mondeo? My googling seems to suggest it's mixed. May be able to stretch a little to buy one of these over the Insignia. More Mondeos about of course. Or maybe I just got unlucky with the Vauxhall and lightening rarely hits the same place twice. :hmm:
I think you were just very unlucky with your car. But if you are looking for long term reliability have a look at taxi ranks. Taxi drivers must have something comfortable and reliable, what they drive might not be exciting, but it will be reliable.

Germany used mercs cos they have specific taxi spec output and offer cash back to taxi users after a couple of years. Elsewhere , Prius aside, Skoda seem to the default.

Prices are still rather high on second cars at least the ones I'm looking at. Hoping this isn't new normal.
I was talking to a friend who works in car finance for a big local dealer and she was saying they can't get cars in quick enough. They tend to do pretty new cars there - when I pass their court they seem to start at 6K. Her belief was people who can afford cars seem to be doubling up, getting electric cars, but because the infrastructure is a bit shit still holding on to a petrol/diesel. I personally don't know anyone who has two cars and only know one or two people who could spend over 6k on one, so I'll take her word.

On my end of the market, I went to veiw a 106 with a mate who was looking to tart and turn it. 13 years old, 80k on the clock, MOT about to run out. On at £800. Got it for £250, took it for an MOT a couple of days later and it passed. Now looking to service it, clean it up and see if he can get a grand for it. A bit hopeful maybe, but he'll make a OK turn I reckon.

There’s a boom across most asset classes- finance is straightforward to get these days. People I know up north all have flash cars on finance- they cannot get their heads around me settling for a utility Skoda estate. Difference is that I actually go places in mine.

Strange time we live in indeed.

I'm giving serious thoughts to a 1.5l focus estate. The extra space of the Mondeo would be nice, but I don't think I need the size as much as I used to and they are a fair bit more. Seems to small an engine for a car that size, but the specs don't sound terrible and I must have got old as I don't actually drive that fast anyway and apparently it has more pull where it counts than it suggests. Plus really high MPG and bugger all road tax is quite a nice bonus.

Entirely rational, as new car production is affected by various shortages and delays.

Used car buyers who used to slag off new car buyers with stuff like "It'll lose half it's value when you drive it off the forecourt" etc.. are now realising they actually needed people to buy new cars so that there were lots of used cars for them to buy.

Prices seem to have gone up again. Truely mad.

all cars have gone up, after effect of lock down
less demand and less car on the road will start to go down again in the next few months

more once the ultra low Z stuff really starts to bite in

They've gone up again though. I mean they were expensive before, but now crazy money. Fustratingly I need to buy a car soon rather then later.

if i was you i'd be looking at private listing in central london around the next month, whilst people are trying to off load non euro 6 diseals

atm its a twin effect from people holding onto cars due the after effect of Covid/Brexit being skint
and other people holding on their motors as its to expensive to move up to an electric motor
and buying a none electric new car is looking like a daft investment,

think its going to get worse before it gets better

you should see how expenisive collecters cars are getting because you have speculater wankers joining the party

So I think I've got a Passat. 14 plate with 90k on the clock and an estate (of course). More then it should have been, but that's the market at the moment. I'd hoped to spend the same money on something a bit newer with lower mileage, but cross fingers it should be solid for a few years. It's also got a natty cream leather interior, which my partner will hate. :D

Currently I'm driving a 2007 Kangoo which is petrol and automatic and not fun on the motorway on my commute. It feels ridiculous to be putting so much fuel into something I don't enjoy driving and it's not even mine, so starting to feel like I was taking the piss a bit.

The push button brake think is prone to failure on Passats, though might be for an earlier model than 2014. Otherwise they’re a pretty decent drive and last well. Is it a diesel?

our previous car (2008 Avensis estate) had a very worn red leather interior, would have been very plush when new. Pleasingly the person we sold it to for £500 has finally got it on the road again according to the MOT history, felt guilty when it wasn‘t taxed or MOTd for almost a couple of years and assumed it had died.

Yes, 2.0 diesel so pleasent enough for motorway driving without being to thirsty. I had an old 3 series with a cream leather interior, it was a bit battered, but felt quality. Its also how I know she won't be keen...

Right, talk to me Urbs...

I've really enjoyed the Octavia VRS, but I don't use it's extra poke much, and it's a bit thirsty for my parsimonious pocket.

So, should I go for another Octavia, but this time a 4x4 version which would be a bit useful on occasion, or do I just follow my heart's desire and go for the exquisitely beautiful Mazda 6 in that gorgeous red they do....?

My milage has dropped right down now WFH has become more embedded, so if I go for the Mazda I might go for the 2.0 petrol rather than the 2.2 diesel.

Going for a 19/20 plate with 25k or so on the clock.

No contest, Skoda Superb. Good luck with whatever you choose.
