Stone, my tubby custard Maine Coon mix, is a triller. To speak to him I blow loosely through my lips for a sort of reverberating brrrr sound. Just done it now to understand how to describe it and he's come up to see me :) I think they do change voice in the presence of others or with new...

...pets, so I need to watch out!) Funny thing about Breeze - she used to be very vocal, but speaking "Maine Coon" which is a sort of buzzing, trilling kind of sound - almost barking when she got excited (like when you were about to feed her.) But, since Charlie arrived last September, she's...

*What book are you reading? (part 2)

One would expect Verso to publish something a bit more critical, no? Anyway, bookmarked, cheers.

*What book are you reading? (part 2)

"Bloody Nasty People" by Daniel Trilling. It's a history of late 20th/early 21st century British nationalism (to put it politely). It's pretty workaday, essentially a left-liberal take on the whole "BNP in electoral politics" saga, but doesn't really dig beyond the usual Guardian-esque tropes in...

Well, they're starting to get on better, or at least are more comfortable being close. What's weird is that Breeze "talks" to him in a strange way - a high pitched squeak of a meow, which she's never done before (rarely meows at all, mostly trills.) These are from last night and earlier...

    RIP Maya Angelou

'A bird doesn't sing because it has an answer. It sings because it has a song.' Caged Bird By Maya Angelou A free bird leaps on the back of the wind and floats downstream till the current ends and dips his wing in the orange sun rays and dares to claim the sky. But a bird that...

Oh, those tiny, tiny ears! Ha ha, loving the "not impressed face." Breeze does something like that - sort of a cross between her usual buzz/trill sound and a grunt. She's not exactly blessed with grace or dexterity, so I think it takes a bit of effort to jump onto stuff, bless!

    *Poem of the day thread

Beauty by Tony Hoagland When the medication she was taking caused tiny vessels in her face to break, leaving faint but permanent blue stitches in her cheeks, my sister said she knew she would never be beautiful again. After all those years of watching her reflection in the mirror, sucking in...

Your daily cat and kitten news

I have to be really careful letting mine have some toys. Sonic has a tendency to chew fur off things and swallow it. Once a friend in the US sent me some cat toys made of longhaired rabbit fur dyed in funky colours and after half an hour with Sonic all that was left was a tube of rabbit skin...

Breeze tends to start the night out in "her" bedroom, but between 6 and 7, she comes in to stand (painfully) on my elbow and trill at me, or brings grey mousie (what was left of brown mousie has vanished) to play. If we've been away (or after I do something stupid like the tumble dryer...

If it's anything like the situation here, you don't get grumpy cat when you've been out/away, you get super-attached velcro cat who cannot bear it if you leave his/her side for more than 5 seconds.

...weekend, so Breeze was quite cuddly last night (which was nice,) but today, she was still being more demanding than usual (e.g. tapping me on the shoulder, bringing toys over, trilling and chatting) and got rather annoyed the two times I had to go out. Worried I'm creating a cling monster now!

David Goodhart in The Guardian - attacking British Somalis?

...(The British Dream: Successes And Failures of Post-War Immigration). I felt obliged to, because I went to a debate between him and Daniel Trilling (previously of New Statesman, now editor of New Humanist, wrote a book about the BNP). It was "chaired" by Sunny Hundal who was unbelievably smug...

I always love vocal pets - had guinea pigs way back (Sugar, Sugar 2, Ebony, Brownie, Candy) and they are a very vocal species. The 'weep, weep, weep' noise when dinner was on its way is unforgettable! And the little chirpy noises at other times. My favourite pets are vocal ones - Parrots...

They say (variously) Wheeeeeeek (generally content) Grrrrrrr (pissed off) Bweeeeeflip (laughging) Rrawwwar (feeling a bit fruity) Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeee (very loudly - FEED ME!) And sing with a voice like a distant curlew (when being cuddled) For what it's worth, the cat rarely meows. More often...
