Your Brixton awards, heroes, zeroes, best and worst of 2016

I don't go to many independent pubs - but I have been impressed by the conviviality of The Junction in Coldharbour Lane.

It re-opened as the Junction in October 2015 apparently (I see from the net) but I think it deserves a mention for the last year because the owners seem to have put some effort in building the business up and at the same time keeping it informal and uncommercial.

Does it qualify as Brixton though? No doubt Marsh and Parsons would describe it as East Brixton/Camberwell borders - but I can tell you it was in Angell Ward pre 2002, which makes it central Brixton pub prior to then.

We've always been pretty loose with our borders! Besides, we've always listed events further afield...

I nominate our beloved community member and campaigner Ann Plant as 2016 Hero of Brixton. Her work to fight for the the survival of her community at Cressingham Gardens and the support and kindness she selflessly provided to so many members of Urban75, in person and online, is absolutely unrivalled. We are all far poorer for her loss and I can think of no one better to be honoured by this accolade than our dear sweet Ann.

The strident 'the road to hell is wide' preacher appears to be back and in better voice than ever. No need for a megaphone at all anymore. He's an absolutely lovely guy despite our differing views on the afterlife.

And Tony at house of bottles who recognises anybody's face even after fifteen years absence and will happily keep impatient newcomers waiting while he catches up. The fury.

a bit of a trek from Brixton but worth the effort is this boozer
The Oxymoron | Facebook
one of thee most eccentric pubs I have been to and a great antidote to the gastro craft ale tendency
the pub is like steptoes gaff inside, I am told everything there is for sale
it has become a bit of a favourite with ex- grosvenor denizens
sadly it won't be around much longer cos the landlord is moving on in late January
and it's mid terrace location means it's 4 am license will be under threat
so best get in there while you can.....

I second Tony. He's bloody brilliant.

I'll nominate Cllr Mary Atkins (Tulse Hill ward) as Zero of the Year for her performance at Lambeth Council's Oversight & Scrutiny Committee, where she accused the membership of Save Cressingham Gardens of creating a "climate of fear" on the estate. Needless to say, the only person with anything to fear is Atkins herself, because she's a thoroughly useless Councillor, and residents get irritated when she plays Lady Bountiful at them when they ask her to do her job.

This is a very dangerous, armed and violent man whose reckless actions could have endangered many members of the public on 1 September 2016.

His identity remains a mystery.
