Yet another choose a bike fred...

Bahnhof Strasse

Met up with Hannah Courtoy a week next Tuesday
For Frau Bahn who's not ridden in years and was none too clever last time out, (ended having her ear stitched back on at the hospital...)

For riding mostly on canal towpaths, up to £300 for a slight woman...

Suggest you steer though.

Audi make bicycles you know, but bigger than your stated price range but a woman of quality must have a bicycle of quality, no? Audi launch €15,300 performance Sport e-tron e-bike

;)

weepiper usually has some good suggestions, I can only give you general advice - get a hybrid or front suspension mtb. Full suspension is overkill but she might want the comfort of front suspension if your towpaths are rough. £300 is towards the bottom of the price range for good new bikes and you may want to have a look in some second hand bike shops to see if they have something suitable if you don't get something decent suggested to buy new

I always look for last years model when choosing a bike. recently the 2016 version of my new bike for half the price of the 2017 version. paint job aside, it looks pretty much the same & the parts seem to be much of a muchness. As with any sport/ pastime, many people want the latest/ shiniest bit of kit- even through the differences between last yea v this year your tow path trundle will be negligible. I always veer towards the clearance section on any bike outlet first. I am notoriously mean tho'

Hybrid Clearance : Bikes | Mountain Bikes | Road Bikes| Winstanleys Cycles

this kinda thang

She might prefer a sit up and beg style if she's a bit inexperienced as it gives a slightly better riding position for the nervous rider. There's one on budget in the Pendleton range:

Pendleton Somerby Hybrid Bike - Mint

I have this style of my bike myself as I prefer the position for commuting in London, but mine's a Specialised and I think was nearer £500 when I brought it a few years ago. It's lighter than many of those style of bikes.

For that money I can buy a car, tax it, insure it, fill it with petrol for 3 years and have money left over to employ someone to drive it for me whilst I sit in the back drinking Tesco* champagne.

* Well I'm not made of money.

I take it that Fran Bahn did not "fly" through her course then.
As for choosing a bike, go and try a few at a decent bike shop (not Halfords, Action Cycles or Cycle King) there may still be a decent one down at Cranleigh or in Guildford and £300, you wouldn't get a month's worth of petrol for that, don't be such a cheap skate.
Seriously, if it's not a half decent bike, it'll end up collecting dust in no time. The better the ride, the more likely it is to get used

She's just been to Kingston today, and thinks she got flashed on the way back

I'm not that bothered how much she spends on a bike, she's the one who's happy with a £100 piece of shit. Still, means I can put the balance towards the Mondraker I'm hankering after...

speed awarness course still fresh in the mind, that worked then :D:D:D
Does she also drive one of those indifferent German motors?

I though Audi drivers were the best for some reason.
You keep an eye on the speedo, instinct, engine noise/gears
Just used to doing whatever speed you feel comfortable at I guess!

She's not a natural Audi driver, more suited to a Ford hot hatch tbf.
Engine noise? Gears? The car's fairly silent unless you rev it, but 90mph can be done at less than 1500 revs in 8th gear, so you can't hear the engine at all at that speed. (She thinks she got flashed in a 50mph zone on the A3, Tolworth maybe? so probably 1000 revs)
Audis should really be exempt from the pettiness of the speed regulations if we're being honest here.

That wasn't a speed camera, that was the sun glinting on something. You will have to wait a few days for the results from the post man.
I thought I had got done once near there by a bobby with a speed camera as I was driving round the long right hander and it becomes 70, but I was clear

. . . easy to nudge over the approved limit when your mind is taken up tailgating and hurling abuse at lesser road users.

And texting. Don't forget about texting

Just a thought though, does the car have a speed limiter? on the company BMW there's one and I use it religiously EVERYWHERE - it makes driving much more relaxing
