Would you pay for Six Music?

Bahnhof Strasse

Met up with Hannah Courtoy a week next Tuesday
If as seems to be the way, the license fee goes, tv and radio stations will become commercial.

If you have ever watched tv or tried to listen to radio in the US ( or Canada, to a lesser extent) you will know how fucking awful it is.

We have Six Music, it’s a hot July Sunday afternoon, they are playing some very mellow French crap I have never heard before. They utterly hit the mood of the moment. Xfm will be playing the same dad-rock playlist they play all week, 24/7, Asolute Radio the same. And so on.

If Six must be commercialised, commercials will kill it. So would you pay a subscription for it?

I won’t for any news sources, get a minor thrill each time I bust a paywall. But think it would be happy to pay for Six, for all it’s imperfections (please stop playing thrash-metal at 1130 on a Tuesday, Mary-Ann), how much I ain’t sure…

Why?

Have never heard your band played on any other station. Not that that means owt.
If you look at the long running thread you'll see that BBC6 mainly winds me up and I stopped listening ages ago.
I'm glad that it exists though, I'm glad that they play my band occasionally and I'm glad that people enjoy it, but I still wouldn't pay for a radio station that I barely ever listen to anymore.

The only radio station we listen to is Smooth, would we pay a subscription for it. Almost certainly not and I can't see myself ever paying for advert free radio, it just doesn't bother me enough.

Well, don’t buy it then.
Gotta say it, but advocating turning a state-funded broadcaster into a subscription service, forcing it to produce content based on competition and the market, seems like quite a capitalist idea. So calling me a capitalist just for asking the price is a bit odd.

Sometimes they have 'trailers' that go on so fucking long it sounds no different to a commercial station.

Six Music is broadly A Good Thing, but I don't listen to it enough to pay for it.

We pay the licence fee, and I think I get most of the value out of that from the radio. Mostly Radio 4 and 6 music. I consider it good value for money.
