He is just a no nothing cunt.
Throwback from the lad mag era.

DId you mean “no mark” or “know-nothing” ?
Or a portmanteau term to encapsulate both of these?

In any event, I’m going to point out that it’s this kind of shit that perpetuates the bollocks we’ve been discussing on the curfew thread.

Because it’s not “no mark”. It has found its mark. The target of this joke has been struck by it.

There will be plenty of pricks thinking “oh leave off, it’s funny! It’s a good joke! It’s only a joke, where’s the harm, nothing is off limits in comedy” etc. and probably riffing on it themselves. The proper pricks and the edgelords will pick it up, repeat it, turn it into a running joke with their pals. They’ll think of this joke whenever they hear the name of GT.

But even if every single person rejects it, it’s still found its mark, because it depends for it’s meaning on a culture that simultaneously reduces women to nothing more than sexualised ciphers, and also seeks to shame us for our sexual desires. By doing so, it perpetuates that culture.

I’m not saying her name in this context because why repeat the connection, and anyway, what I’m saying refers to any woman who has every been on the receiving end of this kind of shit. Which is, like, probably all of us, even if we’re not aware of it, the stuff they say about us when we turn away.

And when I say every single woman has been subjected to misogynistic abuse, this is an example of what I mean. Even if this particular child has not personally experienced direct abuse, here she is being subjected to it in public.

I realise that I’m harking on a single theme these past days, (i find it boring too) but I make no apology for that.
Because maybe one of the ways we challenge this shit is to call out out every time, even the small stuff.

googles etymology of “no mark”

I feel quite sorry for the man.

Imagine if you were a carpet fitter, for example, and you thought you were really good at it. Then you go on Twitter and you discover that not only is literally everyone in the world better at fitting carpets than you but that every time you fit a carpet it makes you look like a try-hard cunt.

:(

Dopey prick can't even measure up a room properly, the arsehole :D

It was a very creepy nonce-y post

It really wasn't a good look. I don't think Twitter is a good place for broken jokes that might be re-worked into something viable after a few more goes (I'm being over-charitable again, aren't I?).

I remember him being on a radio show that Mark Thomas was also on a lot and them bouncing off each other quite well on various subjects. He seems to have been consumed by bitterness at the passage of time.

Are johnnies ethical and recyclable though? He raises an important question.

He raised it by being a cunt but the question is finally being asked.

I did go to his club several times in the 90s , it was a good night (and easy to get home from) . He wasn't left-wing , but didn't strike me as right-wing either, he was bloke-ish. Not sure what happened , his telly gigs dried up , he became bitter, then ukipp-y and unfunny.

“Bloke-ish” often shades into “right-ish” though.

There's something very funny about him, funny peculiar not funny haha

They think it's all over stars haven't exactly shone since their career highpoint. Hurst has turned into a bitter and twisted arse. Rory McGrath's career was effectively ended after he stalked his ex. And looking up Nick Hancock, his last listed gig was a temporary stint on Radio Stoke six years ago, in the true spirit of Alan Partridge.

'It is now' is strangely apt.

Only if you think Lee Mack and Gary Lineker and David Gower have ended up washed up.

Iirc Nick Hancock gave up the "biz" of his own volition and got a normal job

What is about men of a certain age raging at GT?

I watched the BBC documentary about her. My feeling was, watching that, that people take against her because she's the person saying the party's over. She's a figurehead for that. Some people who enjoy a privileged Western lifestyle don't want to be asked to start taking responsibility for the waste they're creating, for global inequality or whatever. They don't want to give up their advantages. Especially if they're being asked by a young woman. So I think it's mostly denial of responsibility and partly misogyny.

Younger people are more on board with it I think. They haven't got so many of the accoutrements of capitalism, their attitudes haven't ossified like those of someone older might have, and in addition, it's them who are going to suffer most from climate problems.

I think I might have just answered a rhetorical question

FTR, the comedy club is still going, and is very good, but he sold it at least a decade ago so it has nothing to do with him any more. Last time I went there was for a charity benefit for refugees (and it was excellent. Josh Widdecombe gained my respect by putting on a first-class set even though he was doing it for free).

Another recent pre-covid visit was all about Suffragettes and feminism (not comedy exactly, but genuinely funny). I hope Lee Hurst read about both.

And why is climate change denial so wrapped up with right wing beliefs?

Because it (the Right) is all about the individual and fuck everyone else, about acquisition and status and fuck everyone else, and about things staying the same or going back to “the good old days”, but anyway not developing. And all that flies in the face of accepting responsibility for climate change and doing something about it.
