Day 9 (over half-way there) Japan v Greece: Chicken Katsu (curry with breaded chicken) v Soutzoukakia Smyrneika (Greek meatballs)

Had a bit of disrupted weekend because I went away for my girlfriend's birthday. But we still managed to do Honduras (Pastelitos de Pollo) and Opera Cake (France) on Friday, Bosnian doughtnuts (Krofne) for Saturday breakfast, Schweinebraten (Germany) - Roast Pork in wheat beer - Saturday evening, then Methoui style Lamb (Algeria) on Sunday.

This evening, it was Italy and England, by means of good-bye.

After much deliberation, England were represented by pork & fennel sausage rolls:

and Ligurian Linguini al pesto, patate e fagiolini (potato and green beans with pasta!)

Ivory Coast for afternoon tea. Financiers au chocolat

(I saw this listed as an ivorian recipe and Abidjan is apparently famous for patisserie and it's one of the leading global chocolate producers. Not entirely convinced of its provenance though! )

Portugal (26 down if you're counting!) - Pasteis de Bacalhau

Salt cod fritters.

(Still to come Belgium, France, Holland, Nigeria, Argentina and Colombia)

Colombia will be tomorrow (arepas con pollo)
Sunday is gonna be Holland (dutch apple cake)
Monday will be France and Nigeria (to be decided)
Tuesday will be Argentina (sorrentinos de jamon y queso) or Belgium (moules frites)

Suggestions for all or any of the above welcome!

Number 27 - Colombia - Arepas con pollo adobado.
Arepas are basically ricotta/mozzarella, fine cornmeal (masa) and water, shaped into thickish pancakes, then cooked on a griddle.
The pollo adobado is cooked chicken, shredded, then fried again in sunflower oil, paprika (I went with smoked), turmeric & oregano.

(careful not to make them too thick... I did following instructions and they were a bit stodgier than I would've liked)

I just clicked on this thread today and Lo Siento’s food just got me big time hungry. <Applauds>. So I looked in the fridge and, in a reverse, decided to cook up something and then decide which match it would be. I ended up with hummus dip with warm pitta bread vs tofu black bean pasties. So would that be Greece vs Brighton & Hove Albion?

Hummus is Cypriot apparently. Greek are very insistent on this point...

Number 29 (France) Baba au Rhum: a little ball of dough soaked in a mixture of apple syrup and rum, on top of an apple compot. (traditionally this has a ridged top, but I don't have the mould so...)

Number 30 (Nigeria) Suya Kebabs: Thin strips of beef (I used braising steak which I'd tenderised by beating it up) covered in peanut oil, then rubbed with a mixture of peanut butter, ginger & cayenne, a crumbled up beef stock cube and salt)

Number 31 - Belgium (Moules Frites)

Sauce is carrots, shallots, spring onions, garlic, chilli, white wine, creme fraiche. Chips done in dripping/
