It's like they purposely want to employ annoying people. David Pleat has as much right to be anywhere near a commentary box as...Andy Townsend has to be near a football studio.
IMO you can always tell when you're watching football in the pub with non-English staff, as they'll have the ITV coverage on (in leiu of the other available options). Like a "well, if you noisy insufferable cunts are going to watch your team, then we'll at least make it as painful for you as possible" policy

I've had the picture from ITV but all the sound comes from Radio 5.
The satellite delay through an analogue tv signal coupled with DAB from 5 live is perfectly in sync so I can just switch off the ads now and listen to the BBC instead.

Can't remember which of Spain's games it was in the last World Cup, but they were discussing why (at that point) Spain always underacheive in major tournaments. Ruud Gullit (for who English is probably his 3rd or 4th language) spoke really eloquently about how regional identities tend to be stronger than national identities in Spain, with people identifying themselves as Catalan or Basque rather than Spanish, which can create divisions and make it difficult for the squad to gel. To which Andy Townsend replied "Yeah, they want their heads banging together."

I think Serbia are going to surprise a lot of people this world cup, they have a brilliant defence on paper and a pretty strong midfield.
