Why are we winning at the olympics?

Totally agree with you there spring peeper!(edit: oops, I was replyin to your post on the last page at the end, didn't notice the other page)

only if you are on the default size..switch to your profile to 40 posts per page. It really does make a difference to your reading pleasure. Took me over 4 years to figure it out. :(

Btw...i read your post prior to your edit, and I thank you for taking the time to support my side.

I bet Usain Bolt never did anything that cool :D

I actually had to google the dude...some runner, right???

meh - nothing competes with a well excuted domino sequence.

Did you ever seen that Honda advert? Where they have all those car parts falling in sequence?

I take it you have seen the japanese one with the books and videos and the billiards dominoes?

Apart from China and the States, everyone's medals are concentrated into relatively few sports. There's been huge investment into British sport since the disaster of Atlanta 1996 when GB only brought home about 15 medals, one of them gold. The swimming team has been slowly turning round for a few years after the their own nadir of Sydney (no medals at all for the first time ever) - the success of swimming has been relatively slight as there is a lot of competition in the sport and as we've seen, one or two spectacular individuals can hoover up a lot of medals.

Basically the way in which British sport is run has become a lot more professional compared to the amateurish mess that still existed in the 90s. We just decided to catch up with the world but it's taken a few years for that to filter through. It's been coming a while though, both Sydney and Athens were two of our most successful games in living memory as well.

Woodward has nothing to do with it, he's only just about to start his job as performance director.

Many reasons, but having never got things right until now we're def over-compensating because of 2012 (with huge injections of state and lottery money).

I also think it's interesting that drug testing may have levelled the field somewhat - I look at the decline in USA and Russian medals for potential evidence of that.

What's also interesting for me is that the real improvements have come in coaching and especially sports psychology - these GB athletes are supremely well prepared (look at the personal bests and how few have choked - it's very dramatic). I suppose that's what you get when you buy the Australian knowledge base wholesale.

Does it really matter? Why are you so obessed with how your country does? Isn't it about all about who is the best athelete/competitor - regaradless of country? Olympic record/world record/country record....even personal best...this is what it is all about.

Why worry about how your country does, why not revel in the concept of human achievement? Enjoy the limits that our fellow humans are achieving...my goodness, this is what it is all about.

Doesn't it do your heart good to see the little countries win a medal? Afghanistan got a bronze..first medal ever...made my heart soar. And the other little countries...bet they are/were glued to the telly's!!!!
What a bizarre post. We shouldn't care about how our country does, but all those little countries, bless them, let them have their fun.

gonna be tough to replicate this success in london, in the cycling particularly - other teams will learn from us

Didn't I read somewhere that the cycling team is set to get even more investment over the next 4 years?

Add that to a lot of our young riders hitting their peak at 2012 and there's no reason why can't do even better in the cycling.

it will be difficult to improve on the 8 golds? out of about 12 cycling events

just seen bernie clifton at the olympics, obviously his act has inspired our golden athletes:cool:
