where to stay in barcelona

ok so am posting this as all the threads are quite elderly about Barcelona that I can see.

I am off for my first visit soon, which areas should I be looking to stay in?

any other up to date tips welcome

Stay near the Place Real and the Ramblas. That's where all the action is.

If you're a bit of a hippy and not a moaner, try this place. Hotel Roma Reial - Hotel Roma Reial Hotel en el Centro de Barcelona

It's quite cheap as a B&B but doesn't (I think) do breakfast. It's not posh but it overlooks the Placa so it can be noisyish till 3 in the morning. I think the noise - people noise, not traffic noise - doesn't matter (cos I like ambience and vibe...) and would ask for a room overlooking the square.

Other than that, there are loads of b&bs in the narrow streets near the Placa.

I don't like Barca, which shocks my Spanish students! If I were to go there I'd contact Stanley Edwards, he knows Spain far better than everyone I know, including the Spanish. I know that there are some here who are very disparaging of him, but in my experience he is always very knowledgeable, friendly and helpful about Spain.

hotel jardi is where I've always stayed but i haven't been for a while.

Its reasonable, clean, and in the barri gotic, between plaza catalunya and the plaza real and near las ramblas

He hates Barcelona though.

I know barcelona very well as my folks live an hour north, and I've been there 20+ times...... so will be happy to answer questions. Ive not been for a while though so I may be a little rusty/out of touch, but can ask my folks for you.

Not my favourite city either, but it is very beautiful and has always provided good work and my best exhibition to date.

My reply to the PM/conversation from Lolo was to look at Barceloneta, close to the beach, more affordable and just a 10 minute walk from Las Ramblas and all the jazz. Barcelona is a beautiful place, but WATCH YOUR BAGS AND POCKETS!!! I have not visited since the mayor was elected. Things may have improved depending on your POV. May well be there myself end of October before flying state side.

Yeah, Barceloneta is great, we stayed there last time we went to Barcelona. Which was 8 years ago, so dunno how it's changed, probably more gentrification.

Get the thread started then  What's the planly Stanley?

Wait for it. Has been a long time planning. Initiated thanks to a very generous Urbanite.

I am gonna do state 101 highway Easy Rider stylee (without the bad ending) from New Mexico (Sant fe) all the way up to Seattle :) Going very slowly. Working my way with money from art alone.

In the meantime, I am heading to BCN to make a bit of cash and not get robbed (again). Tough recovery from the last visit. Literally left with nothing but the clothes I was wearing. One year later and I still need to replace my laptop.
