What's missing from my camping list?

Right - we're off next week for 2.5 weeks of camping - hopefully in France, although we have neither car nor ferry tickets yet. Anyway, it's been a while since we've done full on camping - we've done plenty, but v.v. lightweight as it has been whilst on bikes. Here's my list - what have I missed that I should have added. (I do have a clothing list too - but I'll save you from that... :D)

Some herbs and spices, salt and pepper
TEA – green, camomile, peppermint, normal!
Some of the leftover “look what I found” soups etc
Other left over tinned food (ie apricots/beans etc)
1 saucepan
1 frying pan
Kettle – whistle!
2 mugs
Knives/forks/spoons
2 plates
2 bowls
Washing up brush
Washing up liquid
Bottle opener/can opener/corkscrew

Magazines (buy en route – b4 leaving England)

Sleeping bags
Pillows
Sleeping bag liners
Torch(es) (ie bike lights)

Pillows?

You are going to be carrying quite a lot in your packs by the look of that list, what about scrapping pillows and using your packs as pillows?

no - we will be going in a car. I'm up the duff, so not carrying all that on my back and comfortable sleeping is important!

ah right - what is this? We were going to take our little radio (f*&king cricket season again - 4 years ago our cycling holiday involved gaijinboy cycling behind me waving a radio in the air whilst cycling through Dartmoor as he tried to get better reception to hear the game...). In some ways it was a lonely holiday. :(

Tis a wind up radio, with surprisingly loud volume and reception. Has an LED torch on the side too, and it's splashproof.

Possibly the most pleasing little gadget I've bought in years

E2a - And it's titchy, take up less space in your pack than a can of pop! :)

Does a GPS have a compass built in? (never used one)

If not and you are buying all these maps then a compass might be good.

there's a great scheme in France now involving 1000s of farms and vineyards where you can stay for free as long as you promise to take a look at the farm shop (no obligation to buy). It's nationwide and very well documented so you'd probably never get caught out. Wish I could remember the name of the scheme but some creative googling should throw it up (it was in the Observer travel section earlier this year).

Phones and phone chargers

Plug adapters for phone & camera chargers (Euro - plus Swiss???)

Towels

Decent veg knife, stirring/serving spoon/spatula

Aspirin (available only in pharmacies in France - get funny looks if you ask for drugs in le tabac)

i think it does - actually it's a bicycle GPS (clips on the handlebars of the bike) - but sometimes we use it in cars etc (although it's not ideal).

I have a compass on my keyring just 'cos I like knowing.... :D

Yes - all going on the list except for aspirin which I'm not allowed, will take paracetomol instead - that goes in with clothes and toiletries! Thanks, all things I didn't think of!

AH - I had one of these in Japan - it also had a wind up alarm thing for scaring off bears - which, incredibly, we had occasion to use one evening on a mountain where there were bear warnings. Actually I think it was just a racoon, but we nearly shat ourselves..
