what books would you like to see made into films?

The Boudica books by Manda Scott could be good although I think they'd make an even better HBO BBC series along the lines of Rome

oh yes

Any of the Pratchett Discworld novels- but proper cinema releases, not the so-so TV adaptations.

Thats the one I was going to say. I cant belive no one has done it. Shelly Winters for his mother would be my casting choice. But she may be dead.

it keeps stalling in production, David Gordon Green was going to direct, with Will Ferrell (bad choice), Mos Def and Zooey Deschanel.

Everyone knows Mike McShane has to be Ignatious

I'd give anything to see Consider Phlebas as a film.

Word. I am pretty sure I have espoused the same sentiment on hear before.

Funnily enough, that scene in 5th Element with the uber-ocean liner thing always brings to mind Consider Phlebas.

Heh, Richard E. Grant was definitely who I'd cast as Flashy. I guess KK might be good as Elspeth but I'd always imagined her as shorter, bustier and considerably more scottish.

True enough, I was thinking of someone gorgeous enough to keep flashy coming back for more, perhaps Kelly Macdonald?

that ben elton big brother piss take(dead famous???) i reckon that needs making into a film possibly straight to tv but i would enjoy it.

Consider Phlebas feels more like a screenplay than a novel in many ways anyway. Much of it relies on the impact of scale and setting, and the narrative is a lot like a morally ambiguous version of star wars...

e2a: although nobody in their right mind would try and sell a film called 'consider phlebas' to the american market, it'd have to be called 'planet of the dead' or something equally inappropriate.

I heard reports of The Secret History being made into a film years ago, but nothing seems to have happened.

Also Grits by Niall Griffiths was supposed to have been adapted by the BBC. That's one I'd love to see.

Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy, directed by David Cronenberg

The Forever War by Joe Haldemann - directed by Christopher Nolan

House of Leaves by Mark Z Danielewski, directed by Guilermo Del Toro

I always worry when a film is made out of a decent book in case they make a total hash of it. I'd like to see Green River Rising by Tim Willocks made into a film. It was long enough ago that I read it that I think I probably can't remember enough to pick fault with in a film.

I always thought Green River Rising would make a great film.

I salute your consistency

I want to see The Yiddish Policeman's Union, but that might work better as a moody Scandinavian type TV series

Rendezvous with Rama. It got close to being made by David Fincher a few years ago, but then the project fell though. I suppose they would have to flesh out the characters and plot a little, but I'd love to see that one on the screen.

I'm currently reading "Doghead" by Morten Ramsland. So full of strange and
wonderful imagery, I reckon it would make a fantastic film. Any one here read it?

Having seen so many books I love turned into a pile of steaming turds by the film industry (I Am Legend - both versions! Yes I am looking at you!) I hope to NEVER see a book I enjoy turned into a film.

There are three film versions of I Am Legend. All shit.

That said, about two thirds of all films made are adaptations and some of them turn out well.
