Weirdly specific party request

Hi,

I’ve recently had a break up from a 13 year relationship. On my days that I’m not doing childcare I come to London (don’t live there, can’t afford it). I actually work in London in a hybrid professional job. I’m looking for social things to do afterwards as someone who is 36 and has been emotionally repressed for a long time. I’ve got friends who also want to party. Yet we have no idea where to go because people our age seem to not party quite so much.

I want chaos! Interesting people! Excitement and edge but no drugs. I like nerdy shy people. But I also like weird things like experimental performance art/obscure art films/dodgy music. I would imagine Berlin would tick a few of these boxes but I can’t currently go there to party. So, what’s in London?

Anyone else want to join the great unrepression?

Posting to say I know Eivets and recommended they join, partly because I think they'd fit in and partly because this place saved my mental health when I got divorced. I also understand the unspecificness, I wasn't that sure what I wanted to do after my breakup, I knew I wanted to do 'something'

Underbelly Boulevard Soho | Theatre, restaurant & bar - this has some fun cabaret events. Husband and I went to free cabaret in the bar on a Thursday night (no fee but you need to book) and that was a good fun, drinks aren't mad expensive for Soho either. Most of crowd I'd say probably around your age when we went.

The Matchstick Piehouse in Lewisham is reopening, not sure it has a functioning website or social media platform right now, but it's good for weird performance stuff in a very anti-establishment, socially positive way, so maybe look that up in coming months.

If you like underground techno/house Corsica Studios feels like proper clubbing with a great atmosphere and sound system.

I just KNEW you'd have some answers Cloo, this is your specialist subject.

If you fancy a night in Brixton, Hootananny is pretty good for live bands and late drinking with a big outdoor area open till 3am.

Next door is the Effra Social where I DJ to a happy young crowd (below) on Friday nights till 1am. It's free to get in too.

A short distance away in this Brixton Windmill where there's always interesting bands.

Thanks for the responses. Cloo those are some good things to check out.

I think what I’m looking for is to relive my student years as a 36 year old with friends who I used to study with who are also my age, but because London isn’t the same as it used to be we are feeling alienated and spend far too much time with our parents in suburban towns far away. When we come to London it is fleeting and work oriented, so we want things we can do post 5pm but not too late otherwise we won’t be able to work the next day.

I think I want to go to fun exciting places that are a bit scary but which have an element of familiarity and safety that I can understand. If that makes sense? I want some kind of escape from normality, to enter another world.

Have you tried a teuchter thread?

Welcome!

Maybe you need to revisit the 'not too late' thing as it kind of limits your options? (You're only 36!)

Hello.

Maybe try some of the immersive stuff? Or Escape rooms?

I went, it was OK but as I work in audio visual related stuff I can see all the joins. Most people seemed to love it. There are others around.

Or games bars.

The ICA has interesting exhibitions and arthouse films.

You might like the Exploding Cinema:

Oh, there's going to be an upcoming event very soon at Hundred Years Gallery that I think is gonna be good, but it's not been properly officially announced yet. But you might want to have a look at Hundred Years Gallery's upcoming events to see if anything piques your interest?

Dunno if the Social might have anything of interest to you?

Think New River Studios seems like it's a big focus of DIY stuff atm, they've got stuff like a Huggy Bear book launch coming up?

was and still am in a very similar mindset. divorced three years ago and still occasionally living out the fantasy of being 23 again around London town - raves, "very casual dating", gallaries etc. had a great time (amongst a lot of re-adjusting pain). if you wanna a beer sometime let me know.

There's no such thing as "underground" techno/house. If there was it wouldn't be at Corsica Studios.
Corsica Studios is good though, or at least it was when I last went there, which probably would turn out to be 100 years ago.

The sudden freedom after a long relationship is hillarious. I lean into it. I am disoriented but I kind of enjoy it whilst it lasts. It took me about six months for the energy to come back but I am literal 25 year old now when I have a free weekend. In many ways I’ve had to rebuild a whole new “social” self from the bottom up after having, well, lost nearly everything. Half the week I am with my kids and I am very much a 43 year old Good Dad, the other half well I don’t what they fuck I’m doing :D
