There's no future in England's dreaming
Never know where to put stuff like this so...here.
We had six kids leaving today, four of who I've known for three academic years so it was a chance to say goodbye and good luck. Started badly as the main kid I wanted to see didn't come in, having been shipped off to his dad in France the second his mum got the chance with the end of lockdown. All the other kids were in strange moods, definitely non-celebratory, but we all tried to make the best of it. All staff had made a video for them. They were deeply unimpressed, which was fair enough. Then we found out one of the girls was 20 weeks pregnant to the most drongo bloke imaginable. Way to throw away your life at 16.
Also the Head's last day. He got the send off he deserved, a poor one. He's been useless and I'm glad to see the back of him, as apparently was nearly everyone else.
And then just before I left a colleague came up to me and told me about a fellow staff member. I'd last seen this staff member 2 weeks before lockdown in March when he'd approached me for cancer advice. He didn't have a cancer diagnosis but was worried he might have it, he'd been having trouble swallowing certain foods. He was shitting himself frankly. So today I found out I'm never going to see him again. Throat cancer that spread and the docs have given him weeks to live. He's expressed a desire to keep it quiet and apparently not many of the staff have been told. He married his partner last week. Wanted to wait until September but docs told him this was probably too late. Giant of a man, ex-bouncer, good youth worker. Gentle giant type. Could immobilize you with a flick of his wrist (or yours) type. Really good worker but hated by the management, so we had that in common. Very, very strange to think I won't see him again. Not old, same age as me. All seems so sudden.
Very strange last day of term. Go peacefully J.
