BBC Two - We Are British Jews - Episode guide

When is We Are British Jews on TV? What's it about?

Caught the last 45 minutes of episode one. I'm not sure exactly how enlightening it is, given the length and format; it hasn't really allowed any debate to develop. Rather it's "depicted divergent opinions", in the superficial BBC way. But I'll probably watch the next episode anyway.
Yep to all of that; felt sorry for the 'minority opinion' young women that the production team had included for BBC 'balance'. Seemed like she was a strong person but her treatment looked a little like bullying at times.

I felt especially sorry for the one who'd volunteered in the West Bank. She was incredibly resilient when being harrangued, I thought. The young woman for whom everything was "nuanced" I found a bit irriating.

There's another young woman, not very bright, who finds it "empowering" as a woman to be segregated away from the main body of the synagogue. She's especially blinkered. It would be impossible to have a debate with her anyway, even if that was the intention of the programme.

Indeed. Looks like they are getting more into the problems next week, with the hardcore walking out after having to listen to the 'terrorists' moaning.

I thought the first episode was a slighty unfair/awkward, but maybe the next offers some balance.

Second and last episode was last night. If you've not seen it yet, look away now.

Yes, I found this odd. One woman is empowered because she gets to spend time with 'ladies only' and away from the men, and the only really oppoinsing view is that 'Hey, you have to respect their traditions. What can you do?'. . . but then again anyone massively against any of this wouldn't be there. If we watched it and were a bit shocked then the point was maybe made somewhere. Dunno.

Oh shit, I thought it was a weekly. I'm not great at telly these days. Should I look away (from this thread) due to spoilers or because my blood will boil if I watch the second one?

I'm just going to say "humus". (Probably to Jewish Millennials whenever I see them).

Thought Ep.2 made for more engaging TV, tbf.

The ‘interactions’ with Palestinians certainly exposed blinkered views from some of the participants. The end was quite strong,
I thought.
The end was quite strong and well done. A lot of the other stuff smacked of manipulative creation of confrontation for the sake of it, or for the sake of telly drama and not for understanding.

When the two lads spoke about the people they'd lost to violence in that last scene, I thought the panel were going to cry.

Liked that they found at least some tiny grain of hope at the end (even if this is a TV cliche in itself)
Didn't like how little the programmes explored conflict between secular and the ultra-orthodox, either in the UK or within Israel.
Overall found pts 1&2 much better (though even more infuriating and depressing) than I thought they would be.

Yup, pretty much this. And the scene setting voice overs and info graphics were very superficial.

Part two had more to it, though it was staged set up after staged set up, and came off like a sort of current affairs TOWIE, right up until that last encounter.

Watched episode one now. I think they did well with getting a pretty representative cross-section of British Jewry, and they showed how you do have many Jews who aren't religious but are socially and culturally Jewish as well. I think Damon represents the Jewish everyman, I would say his views and feelings are typical of many British Jews. I felt Simon's degree of open-mindedness despite his support for Israel was commendable. Lily, Emma and Simon are most like the the Jewish people I know (Emma looks vaguely familiar - might be a member of my shul or live locally)

Nice to see Purim represented.... we're planning to all come to shul for it next year dressed as the Knights Who Say Ni :D
