iirc, i've done exactly half in total

I've done 39 in total, I picked the ones I haven't been to for the poll.

By the way, it is amazing how many people believe there are 52 states. I've even met some Americans who believe it.

there are americans who believe a lot of things. afaik, the quality of the education system can vary considerably between regions.

Between classes really. The best educated people I've ever met have been Americans, as have the most ignorant.

i can still remember some stuff like names of state capitols that was drilled into us in US schools from quite a few years back and not really having needed to know much of it since. however, i'd suspect that the education available to kids of those working in the high tech centers in mass were likely better than most. it's this time of year i miss being there

On that basis I chose Nebraska, although I haven't been there.
Cheat. That was my first choice but saw someone had already voted for it so I chose Montana.
Been to them all except for Hawaii though Utah doesn't really count as I never stayed overnight.

Maine? not really an obscure state afaik  and a big tourist destination, only about 60 miles north of Boston, where needless to say 1000's of British tourists each year.
It's not gonna be Oregon or Hawaii either.

Idaho.

Why would anyone want to go there? Apart from having the first town on the planet to be lit with nuclear power (and now serious amounts of plutonium in the water system), it's a nothing state. Doesn't even produce that many potatoes.

been there, though was hitching to NYC. It looked like the place Rambo was filmed. Was into geology at the time & the palce was littered with mines. Still a tick on dwyers list though.

How about Wyoming? I've never heard of anyone going there for a holiday, at least not anyone from outside the US.

I like the story of the vegetarian (I think he was a British DJ) who once visited the state briefly and went into a restaurant there, only to find that pretty much every dish was steak ands those that weren't were some other meat. He asked the waitress if she had any suggestions for vegetarians, to which she replied "Get out of Wyoming, boy!"

 you hitched to NYC, from Idaho? How long did that take you and when was this?

I'm calling thread fail early. Sorry, phil :(
there has to have been a few urbans that have been to Oregon, Utah, and Wyoming, as they are all states with big tourist appeal.

Seattle to NYC, about a decade and a half ago. Apart from the October weather in the cascades, it was a lovely trip. took 4 /5 days or so - never had to sleep out as I was given a bed each night , and copious amount of weed and beer along the way :D. getting dropped off in detriot was a bit hairy, but only because I had to find my way across town to a decent Interstate junction to get out.the finale leg was from Philly to NYC with an NYC fireman and given the grand tour of his Brooklyn station, including sitting in the fire engine like a little kid!

I was not propositioned/mugged/shot during the trip. The US does get a bad press sometimes, but outside the cities, people couldnt be more friendly.

Dakota was pretty stunning in a bleak sort of way

There is no reason to go to Nebraska, not even as a pass through.

I always wanted to go to Nebraska as I'd seen pics and movies of Great Plains and although I can't really stand Springsteen was really taken by his Nebraska album. The plan went slightly wrong when I got married to a girl from the rather boring Omaha but I had fun there and in the state capitol/college town Lincoln. The northeast corner bordering on SD is quite pretty in a way and I actually used to love driving through the night to go skiing in Breckenridge/Copper Mountain.

How about Wyoming? I've never heard of anyone going there for a holiday, at least not anyone from outside the US.

Ever heard of Yellowstone National Park? Quite a lot of people go there and it's recommended though the one in that region that really blew my head away was Glacier National Park, MT.

I lived in California in the mid-eighties for a year, when I was 10, and we had regular tests on this. I think the highest I ever got was 11. I also refused to 'pledge allegiance to the flag' after a couple of weeks.

Most of them are cunts, ime, but the nice ones are lovely if you can find them.
