Travel plans, abandoned holidays and refund advice

No, you are right, Azores doesn't require the quarantine.

Wait and see what happens, we'll know by the end of this week what the UK's new rules will look like, we should hear next week if Portugal has changed their rules too.
Phew - thanks so much. I didn't know there was a date when we might hear. Fingers crossed! I do really want to go - it looks amazing!

Portugals quarentine doesnt apply to double jabbers and under 18s ( but do have to have a negative test) . Doubt if this will change next week tbh, cases rising , vaccine rate accelerating but way behind the UKs.

So what's the process for getting tested whilst overseas and on return, Bahnhof Strasse ?

Google up PCR testing in **** for travel and it will through up some local centres. Book in your test to be within 72 hours of your departure for the UK, they will email you a negative test certificate which you upload to the UK passenger locator form which you can fill in from 48 hours prior to your arrival in the UK. On that form you can buy the day 2 test as well and once you have taken that you upload the results of that one to the form.

I've just booked all these, so you book a lateral flow test that gets sent to you to take with you, and make video call appointment to have your test and result certified and for the day two when home you can book a home PCR to be sent to you to send off. You need proof of buying both for you passenger locator forms

So you take the test with you on holiday then test yourself within 72 hours of your return too?

So if my holiday is 15 days (Saturday - Saturday) and I have to take a test on days 6 and 12 to comply with Azores regs, then I will have to take another test on day 13-14 to be able to come back to the UK? Or can you do it on the day you leave? How long do results take to come through?

Who did you book your tests through Harry Smiles?

I've not looked at anywhere other than the Balearics to be fair.

Randox for the return PCR tests and Colllinson for the LFT out there. There are discount codes of the Jet 2 website, which work regardless of who you book with

The more I read this thread the more convinced I am that my 'fuck this for a game of soldiers' policy is the correct one, not that I will pass up the chance to get up on my soap box and lecture others about how they should be noble and self-sacrificing like me.

Headlines today is all about a rush to go to Amber list countries. As above it looks like a load of hassle and then there's the airport queues to enjoy at the end. I've got till the end of year to use my flight/hotel vouchers so will wait it out I think.

Lucky you! I can’t travel at any other time so I have to go this summer. The Azores aren’t exactly a package holiday hotspot so hopefully I’ll be okay when it comes to airport queues (plus the airport is bloody tiny!)

Booked a trip to Croatia which is Green 'watchlist'. I was dreading all the testing hassle and expense but so far it looks not as extortionate as I feared. Fingers crossed for airport queues.
  1. Ordered 2 antigen 'fit to fly' tests for entry to Croatia and England = £75
  2. Ordered a Day 2 PCR test to be taken when I get back to England = £55

Its not too bad but if its a family holiday with kids that scales up quite sharply.

I've made the decision that it's not worth it for short weekend breaks so the only time I'll be going abroad for the foreseeable is for one week plus holidays.

IS it just a case of dropping your swab tube off at a Pharmicist or do you have to travel to some private clinic?

For the antigen ones I just take them at home, upload the results and they send me a certificate within 3hrs. I think they're just like the freebie NHS tests and you're paying for the certificate.
For the Day 2 PCR one (from AssuredScreening) there is the option of posting it back, or dropping it off in one of the company locations (Kings X for me). I think the main thing is they give you a code to give to Border Control to prove you've booked it.
I'm going for 10 days to make it all worthwhile. I dread to think what happens if I actually test positive.
Teaboy kids under 10 or so look to be exempt from most of the testing (apart from the Day 2 which is the most expensive).

Just back from Croatia. It was all surprisingly straightforward. All the checking of test results and locator forms was done there and I wasn't asked show any covid documents to anyone in England.
I had a panic when my antigen test needed to get back into England failed to return a proper result but in the end I was able to get one in Dubrovnik airport without too much trouble. Plan C was just paying the £500 fine on return to the UK but I wouldn't have been allowed on the plane so that turned out to be a non-starter.

So my conclusion is go on holiday but maybe take a spare return test with you (in case the 1st one fails or is +ve and you want to commit fraud to get back home).

I'm in the process of sorting out my PCR test for departing the UK. Can I order it now, even though I'm not flying till the 28th? Can't find an answer anywhere!

Very confusing. I have to have one within 72 hours of arriving in Turkey - does this mean the sample, or the results?
"Passengers from the UK require a negative PCR test, within 72 hours of arrival, to enter Turkey."

Now even more confused about time difference. I arrive at 5pm ish on Saturday.

The sample must be taken within 72 hours of your scheduled arrival in Turkey. You can book it in now to be taken on 26th August. Be careful of ones saying 24 hour turn-around, we did one that said that and it turns out 24 hours from when it reaches the lab, not from when it was taken, the test was taken 11am in Guildford, the lab was in Norfolk and the batch of tests didn't leave Guildford until 8pm, so arrival in Norfolk would be around 11pm, which was too late.

Ah thats tight. So I take the sample Wednesday evening but can't drop the thing off till Thursday morning, then it has to be sent off. I suppose its just an email that comes? No printed copy? Looks like I may need to pay ££££ for an in person one..what a rip off.

I'm ordering a home one - do you know if I can order it now? Or do I need to wait for some reason?

Surely its just easier to do one at the airport before you travel or are those prohibitively expensive?

You can't check in without it, so for those who like to check in online prior to travel to grab seats and whatnot waiting until the airport doesn't work, and yes the airport ones cost more. Surprised WH Smith isn't doing them tbh.

Not unless you have a good way of getting to the airport. I already have a very early start and a whole day of travelling to get to Turkey.
Dropped my test off this morning in a plastic box at some new age hippy shop.
