Trains that run down the middle of a town's street

The nearest thing we have in London is on Mildmay Grove but there's walls and a bit of a drop there.
 
They used to run trains down the side of the Town Docks in Hull on what were and are public roads, although at that time they didn't see much activity that wasn't connected with the docks anyway. They closed quite early and I can't find a pic of them operating, but some of the rails are still there.

It's one of the quirks of British railways that they're so segregated from other highways and so well fenced off. In a lot of places unfenced lines running alongside roads and ungated level crossings are common. One that I want to go on is the Harz Mountain railway, a narrow-gauge network in eastern Germany that still operates timetabled steam services, and although obviously it's mainly a tourist attraction these days it's a lot closer to being a serious public transport business than most steam railways. They have their share of level crossing idiots too:
