Train travel in Vietnam

Yu_Gi_Oh

天天好心情
Has anyone got any experience taking sleeper trains through Vietnam? I'm planning on taking a train from China into Hanoi and then down to Nha Trang. I'd be really interested to hear about anyone's experiences or see their photos! Or just general stuff about Vietnam too, or suggestions for cheap but nice places to stay overnight in Hanoi if we need to?

Thanks! :)

Saigon … shit; I'm still only in Saigon … Every time I think I'm gonna wake up back in the jungle. When I was home after my first tour, it was worse. I'd wake up and there'd be nothing. I hardly said a word to my wife, until I said "yes" to a divorce. When I was here, I wanted to be there; when I was there, all I could think of was getting back into the jungle. I'm here a week now … waiting for a mission … getting softer; every minute I stay in this room, I get weaker, and every minute Charlie squats in the bush, he gets stronger. Each time I looked around, the walls moved in a little tighter.

I hope that helps. :)

:D :D :D

If they're anything like Burmese trains you probably don't wanna go on a long journey by train.

It's only 11 hours! Oh, 13. But still. :hmm: I love the idea of taking the train from here to there. And it's half the price of flying. They can't be much worse than Indian sleeper trains surely?

I dunno. Are they very bad? The dude on Seat 61 does say

Vietnam's air-conditioned trains are safe, comfortable & inexpensive, the ideal way for independent travellers to get around and see Vietnam at ground level. The train journeys are a genuine Vietnamese experience in themselves, an integral part of your visit to Vietnam.

So I could be doing them a disservice.

Looks quite similar from that link of Minnie's. It'd be a good laugh I bet. I don't think I could handle 36 hours all the way down South but 13 hrs should be alright, I would've thought. Is it easy enough to get over the border from your way then?

Yes! We can go from here to Beijing, then to Nanning which is down south and then get a special sleeper to Hanoi, then the train from hell down to Nha Trang. :hmm:

Yeah, he makes it sound idyllic! But then almost everyone on Minnie's tripadvisor link seem to be utterly traumatised. I don't remember cockroaches on the trains in India. :(

That looks fucking ace. I'm jealous; it's been years since I did anything like this.

I've seen a couple in India. Second class sleeper. It sounds like they've got a few mod cons like air con and whatnot so I doubt it'd be the train from hell. The photos of the 'dirty toilet' just looked like standard Asian train bogs to me. I reckon it'd be a great journey - people selling you food and stuff while you take in views like the above, chatting with the locals and all that. I loved Indian trains for this - I think this would be pretty similar.

That's the spirit NVP! :) We did take second class sleeper in India but obviously we went to the pharmacy first so slept really well. It's an opportunity I don't want to miss, how often do you get the chance to make such a long and beautiful journey, and the prices are much lower than flying.

I reckon we've lived in China long enough to be immune to the odd filthy toilet, and if we booked top bunks I guess there'd be fewer cockroaches up high... And I could get us sleeping bag liners and ear plugs easily.

I am led to believe that similar sleeping aids are available in Vietnam.

Also, I think you should make the slight detour over the highest train line in the world to Lhasa from Beijing on the way back. It shouldn't take you out of your way too much.

I always look at the location of people who post on Trip Advisor. If they're Americans or Singaporeans, I tend to ignore them. You only need to look on something like Fodor's Forum to see the type of things that upset some delicate Americans, ie. no sheet underneath duvets, no mixer taps etc. (Of course, there are people like this the world over, but these little things particularly upset the Americans) :D

ORLY? At the pharmacy? Lhasa may be another trip. :D

That's a good point. It does seem split between people who liked it and people who were appalled. :D Apparently cockroaches hate catnip, so I could buy some catnip spray and cover my bunk in it.

I went on train there, ho chi minh city to da nang and then hue to hanoi, was about 8yrs ago, train was good (on a par with british intercity of the time) although I had air-con seat not sleeper as sleepers were booked. I suggest visiting Hue.

Trip advisor reviews look like total bs compared to my experience.

Wife and I started in the north and went south, taking the train. Awesome experience and totally safe and inexpensive. Can't remember if we blogged but will check. Definitely best way to do it.

I've not done train travel in SE Asia but I've done shit loads in Europe and those photos look no worse than the sleeper from Istanbul to Belgrade or other Eastern European services.

Tbh yu I reckon if you're an experienced sleeper traveller it'll be a piece of piss. I am well jel

I travelled from Hanoi to Hué on a sleeper and then on to Da Nang in November.

Trains were great, much better than the ones we used in India. We shared a 4-berth cabin with another British couple on the sleeper.
There were different classes with most foreigners being in the Livitrans private tourist sleeping-cars.
Mrs Llama booked our tickets through a Hanoi-based agent in advance.

I can give you names for the places we stayed in Hanoi, Hué and Hoi An later if you'd like them. Places were generally of a good standard with PCs in quite a few rooms. The hotels in Vietnam are VERY TripAdvisor aware, and we found at least one where they'd blatantly gamed the system. If reading reviews, check to see what other places the reviewer has visited. Lots of glowing reviews are the only reviews done by that reviewer.

nipsla I'm not sure I'd call myself experienced, but thanks. :) My friends are doing the trans siberian this summer from here to Europe and I was well, well jel of that too.

It's really great to see people on this thread who've had actual positive experiences, this is just what I was hoping! craigxcraig I am enjoying reading your blog, thanks so much! And Lazy Llama I would be really grateful for a suggestion of a place in Hanoi of reasonable price, if you have one, just in case we can't face making the fourth leg of the journey consecutively and need a break on dry land. Thank you. :)

I reckon since we're getting on at Hanoi, where the train starts from, it'll be cleaner than say getting on in the middle of the journey, I've found this to be the case on Chinese sleepers anyway. :hmm:

I took the train from Hanoi to Saigon a few years ago, stopping at a couple of places along the way and it was totally fine - nothing fancy but comfortable enough and mile after mile of amazing scenery.

Broke the journey at Dong Hoi, Danang for Hoi An, and Quy Nohn - all pleasant enough but if I was doing it again I think I'd make my way south faster so I could spend more time in the delta.
