Time Bandits

It’s alright. Feels like Horrible Histories meets Our Flag Means Death. Firmly aimed at all audiences so tone-wise it’s much more the former than the latter.

No one has mentioned the marvelous casting in the original, especially given the mores of the time. However, I imagine Gillingham had input in that.

David Rappaport is always a brilliant actor, and the scene where Wally thinks Fidget is gone for good is a proper tear-jerker.

The bit with Sean Connery where Kevin is abducted by the Bandits genuinely affected me as a young teen.

The bit with the Ogre (played by Snouty from Porridge) is a cracker too.

Great film which I took delight in showing my kids when old enough.

The lastest two episodes dropped together. They're not as well paced as the first two. Still fun to be had, but I can see it becoming bogged down in comedy cameos and quest of the week. it is already starting to repeat itself a bit with the scenes of Pure Evil or Supreme Being feeling the same each time.

I was attentive through the first two episodes, but my mind was wandering through these two.

I don't think I've seen the original film, I can't recall doing so, but watched the remake series recently and it's okay, funny enough, not brilliant. It's family-friendly viewing, suppose it's good for watching on a rainy Sunday afternoon kind of thing.

The adult actors are quite caricature-y and hammy acting, and it's all a bit silly, but when I Googled and found out it was a bit Monty Pythony I thought, Ah, that figures.

I thought Kal-El Tuck was very good as Kevin.

And it's gone

Apple TV is a bit odd. They deliver some good shows, but don't seem to advertise (or hype) them at all.

I quite enjoyed Time Bandits, but it could have easily been wound up in a single series and done. It seems to be a writer/director conceit to create openings for further series when they have no guarantee that there is going to be one. Disney's The Acolyte felt like an 8 episode set up for a second series that is never coming. Even while enjoying The Time Bandits I was pretty sure it wasn't going to get a second season. There was zero interest for or against it anywhere. Show runners should be containing their stories to single seasons if they've no promises on making more.

Its certainly distressing when you invest in a show - for example, The OA, Outer Range, The Peripheral, The Sarah Connor Chronicles etc - and it gets lost on a cliff hanger. Currently being wowed by Twin Peaks season 3, but would rather not have to wait 30 years for resolving stories (not that am expecting a proper resolution in TP!)

Was kind of interested in seeing Time Bandits at some stage, the same with the Willow series (now vanished) to see how it compared with the original but not sure if will bother now...

I would say that Time Bandits does have a full story for the main characters, which rounds up nicely at the end of the season. There are some sub-plots which were clearly planted to be explored later, but they were not essential to the show or enjoying the best of the show. The character of Kevin is the show, and when the focus is off of him and his quest it dips in quality a bit, but I still found it fairly entertaining and good fun throughout.
