Thoughts on Libertarianism

Serene

Slightly disgruntled
Do we have definitions and opinions on Libertarianism? Is Libertarianism a good thing? If so why? If not why?

In Spanish, Anarchism and Libertarianism are considered more or less one and the same thing. I've enjoyed the writings of Maurice Brinton, English Socialist Libertarian. Its literally the opposite of authoritarianism! In the English-speaking world, its usually thought of in terms of an ideology for greedy rich people placing personal freedoms before any concern for others. I reckon Libertarianism is a good thing, and have had nasty looks for admitting it among lefties, who must either be authoritarian, or ignorant of what it actually means, simply perceiving the anglo saxon right wing connotations.

That is very interesting. Could you give a concise definitive meaning of Libertarianism. What is it exactly?

Libertarianism is right wing?
Well, that’s the problem. No, originally it wasn’t. But in the mid 20th Century, the term was appropriated by the likes of Hayek to mean the kind of laisse faire capitalism they were pushing. “Fuck you” capitalism. This American movement gained ground, and so this is the meaning that most English speakers would now attach to the word. Sadly.

The first anarchist group I joined back in 1972 was called Croydon Libertarians. I believe they used that rather than Anarchist so as not to scare off potential recruits. Yet they used to advertise meetings in Freedom, the anarchist weekly.

One of the definitions I have encountered during my reading was by a journalist writer called Neil Peart whom in an interview said that it was to do with having a government having very little control over things. Also that it was to do with the individual having control over their own affairs, particularly business.

Liberty-ism. Libertarians seek freedom in all aspects of life, and seek to enjoy emancipation, cooperation and conviviality among likeminded citizens. There is no higher authority than these communities of resistance, not the state, not political parties or unions, just groups of free spirited free thinkers mutually supporting one another.

One of my favourite books is Ghost Rider, by Peart. It refers to the Ghosts that were riding with him as he grieved for his wife and daughter :(

for what American libertarianism means have a look at the reaction from Biden pardoning weed charges yesterday

Love that definition. That is what I say it is. You have put your finger on it.

hmm you can co op that meaning for a lot of bampots

Points to america, fundie brexit partys and a few others

odd when these groups pop up they have no problems removing freedom from other groups as it does not match their freedom

problem with Libertarians

Yeah. Theoretically, anarchists and neoliberals have that in common. While anarchists and other socialists, who want state ownership of Everything, are divided by this. But I reckon these things shouldn't be dogmatised (flexible free thought), and in practice there's no reasons all socialists can't unite, despite fundamental differences in ideology.

I have a funny sense of humour. What was the weed pardoning? I am not aware of it. I was on the Bus this week and the smell of high-strength weed was particularly strong, even than usual.

Yeah, it’s a bunch of tech bro’s who know everything about you. They all build escape homes in the New Zealand outback. They don’t believe in society. For them everyone is out for themselves. They can afford it.

Interesting.

The individual / social anarchism distinction might be relevant. Right wing libertarianism likely has have much in common with followers of individual anarchism. Even though this distinction stems from the left.

"I explained to them that President Biden is taking the first steps to ending the War on Drugs, which is a war on American citizens, and that his reforms are going to mean positive change for individuals, families and job opportunities. Everybody deserves a second chance."
