This year at the theatre....

Rochelle and Marvin Humes. Her from The Saturdays pop group. And TV presenter. Him from JLS pop group. Also TV presenter. And Ashley Banjo. From Diversity dance group. And other things. Including judge of dancing on ice.

None the wiser, but thanks for the knowledge :)

Saw The 39 steps at the Trafalgar (nee The Whitehall) theatre. It’s not brilliant but it is good fun with some great set pieces. It’s a four hander with some references back to theatre’s tradition of putting on farce. (Farces?) . Not a classic but I’m glad I saw it.

I saw Cable Street last week, at the Southwark Playhouse.

It was good, but not as good as I was expecting. I thought it would be more insightful.

Has anyone else seen it?

Stoppard's The Real Thing at the Old Vic is hugely fun. Not the perfect play (it's a bit dated and didactic, but hey it's Stoppard) but close to being a perfect production.

Finishes on 26 October. If you're a Stoppard fan it's a must-see.

(Also looking forward to The Invention of Love soon at the Hampstead Theatre with the incomparable Simon Russell Beale).

I'm seeing A Christmas Carol at the Old Vic in December.
Loved it last year. Especially loved the free satsuma and warm mince pie. 😋

It's a great venue. They seem to have some sort of discount for Lambeth residents - at least I got one.

I can't wait! This will be my 5th time. Really looking forward to seeing John Simm, I thought Christopher Eccleston was brilliant.

Yes I have local discount. But seems it only works on off peak.
With The Christmas Carol I didn't have the luxury of looking for different tickets. The good seats go so fast for this performance.

Yes loved Eccleston. First times I'd been. All very magical.
Totally loved it when all the food was passed down from top of the theatre to the bottom. 🤣

We're going to see Sigourney Weaver as Prospero at the theatre just before Christmas. Jamie Lloyd production, should could be great or dreadful, but Sigourney Weaver as Prospero. Good supporting cast, too.

I went to see Leo Sayer at the London Palladium last Tues. Absolutely mesmerising.
For 76, he's still very much got it.
By it hope you mean his rare book collection...his refusal to sell is what dragged him out of retirement last time apparently

Dr Strangelove with Steve Coogan in multiple roles. Not an easy thing to convert to theatre..but they did a good job.
Really enjoyed it

I think we’ll be able to go to a Punchdrunk! Viola’s Room. It’s an hour’s duration, on rails, wheelchair accessible. Anyone been?

Not to that one - looks interesting!
I went to one of their events in 2011 based on the Charles Dickens short stories in The Uncommercial Traveller, held in an empty shop with little spaces for each set of characters who interacted with you - was really great!

I missed that one, sounds really good.

This looks like a lot of the ideas that worked well in their Kabeiroi, which is the last Punchdrunk we went to. Headphone guide (Helena Bonham Carter, this time round), very small groups with staggered times, on rails rather than free exploration, but in a much tighter slot - Kabeiroi was about six hours! - and without the frisson of not knowing which random encounters were with the cast, and which were just what happens when you are wandering around Bloomsbury trying to solve clues. Looking forward to it.

Hadestown at the lyric. Brilliant. Epic, moving, inventive. Songs, musicians, singing, performances and tech all top draw. Tickets not too pricey for West end.
Highly original and full of edge and energy. Refreshingly devoid of musical theatre clichés and scmaltz and of over trained singing voices.
One of the best shows I've ever seen.

The Buddha of Suburbia at the Barbican. Maybe a touch long but an excellent production.
Saw that yesterday!
Was sceptical at the beginning but by the end thought it was quite good.
I don't think it was too long but maybe they tried to cram a bit too much stuff into the length that was available.
