There's surely no hope left for Palm now, is there?

I've been thinking about this a lot today and 100 million or not, I cant see what Palm can actually do that is going to prevent a level of disinterest from the press. Perhaps very similar from the public as well.
I love Palm, but I can't think of anything that's going to get me interested!

If they come up with something as stunning as Sony's new netbook - and back it up with strong software - then that could keep me in the game, but I'm not hopeful at all.

Palm's blog is starting to big it up:

Get past the opulent casino in the Ventian hotel and you'll arrive at Palm's oasis of anticipation where we've invited several hundred of our closest friends -- and fiercest critics -- to witness the unveiling of some Palm New-ness at CES, the ginormous consumer electronics expo in Las Vegas. Stay tuned to this blog for live udpates.

Overnight, the ballroom we're in has been transformed from day-before chaos into an environment of understated elegance and simplicity. There's a crisp video screen that's bigger than several small countries, but it blends in seamlessly with the bamboo decor. And in about an hour, we can let you know what it's all about.

Looks like the announcement is 7pm....

Palm webOS is the new name for Nova
The whole thing is built on HTML and CSS.
Palm PRE is the new device : EvDO - CDMA, WiFi, 8GB storage
Bluetooth 2.1, 802.11g, GPS, TI Omap CPU
Removable battery, MicroUSB and native mass storage support.
3.5mm headset jack and the traditional ring/vibrate switch.
320 x 480 touchscreen display
3mp camera

Well, it just about presses every single button hardware wise, multi touch screen, portrait keyboard, 3.5mm jack for music, replaceable battery, mass storage support, 3MP camera plus all the above connectivity. 320x480 woo they went wide screen.

Looking very very nice indeed.

My only gripe is that to support that keyboard gives it a depth bulk I'm not sure I'd be happy with. Depends on how big it is in your pocket. The only way I was going to have the iPhone being as big as it is front on was because it was so thin.

Nice specs.

I see maps, but I didn't see GPS?

I'll look back later on to see how it all panned out and the press reaction.

e2a : Oops , it does have it all...

Some nice looking apps, including an IM client demoed using GTalk.

Thumbnailed bookmarks in the browser, landscape browsing if you turn the device, lots of goodness.

Wireless charger - conductive charging. That'll be interesting.

"We have Sprint as our exclusive launch partner"

Pre will be available in the first half of 2009

So a fairly solid looking phone but will it keep Palm in the game with the tough competition from RIM, Apple, Google and Microsoft?

magic 8 ball says, ask again later

I need some more detailed technical info on how apps are developed, what they can do and most importantly how they're going to be downloaded. Also about how it's supposed to sync with stuff, because it does need to, it can't live in the cloud.
